I'm trying to remember the name of either a military or police group - pretty sure it is for South American countries - in the movies there is always this heavily armed group that comes and throws people in jail - not mercenaries or guerillas, what are they called???

Trying to decide where to go on a trip this Summer to experience Latin America. I went to Peru this past Summer, loved it, although since we spent very little time in Lima, there wasn't much exposure to Latin culture. So what's the best place? Mexico, maybe Venezuela?

Brazil also intrigues me, although that's not Latin. Can anyone tell me whether there is a noticeably different vibe in Brazil then in other South American countries? Just wondering. Brazil's high on my list too. Or, you can just tell me what you think the #1 place you'd want to go to in all of South America (plus Mexico and Central America).'

Thanks :)

I know this question should be under music, but oddly enough there is not such a thing as a subcategory for Latin music. So I hope somebody in LatinAmerican travel knows this.

I think I'd like to take some time off work and travel by car (4x4) from NY through Mexico to Tierra del Fuego. I was doing a search on Amazon and there are several books on this topic with regard to doing it on a Motorcycle (such as Odyssey to Ushuaia: A Motorcycling Adventure from New York to Tierra del Fuego).

Are there any similar books (or websites) chronicling such an adventure by 4x4? Or should I just use the motorcycle books for planning purposes and consult country specific travel guides for the details?

I'm mostly concerned with the Mexico to Panama leg of this journey. Once I get to Colombia, I have friends who are in 4x4 clubs and would journey with them on south to Tierra del Fuego.

Has anyone ever been to San Andres Island in Columbia? A fellow coworker from Columbia suggested we visit the Island instead of our original plan to go to Cuba. I checked it out and it is super cheap coming from Canada. March should be perfect weather too... I've done a little research and it does seem absolutely beautiful. How are the beaches? Is it safe?

I have been asking a couple of questions here in Yahoo about DATING in Colombia and I have been repeatedly called a pervert and was threatened by many people who said they wanted to put me in jail. I never talked about sex in my questions nor I said anything illegal. After this experience it seems to me most Americans either do NOT know how to read or they have a fixation on sex. I just can't understand why Americans have such perverted thoughts and they try to project them onto others like me who never said anything about sex on our questions. It's sad Americans have such an obsession with sex and are so perverted. I'm guessing their perversion in due to the high level of repression in which they live in the US. I wonder why their soldiers rape so many iraqui women and the women soldiers have fun with the prisoners at Abhu Grahib. It's so sad. They have forgotten their Christian values.

any thoughts about protecting one's self as far as immunization and reducing health risks when traveling to Brazil (mostly urban). Things like what food to avoid and health in general. I'm planning on a trip that is not on the regular tourist trail that is mostly in average people's homes and restaurants. I going to try to experience the normal life there, how can I prepare?
