any thoughts about protecting one's self as far as immunization and reducing health risks when traveling to Brazil (mostly urban). Things like what food to avoid and health in general. I'm planning on a trip that is not on the regular tourist trail that is mostly in average people's homes and restaurants. I going to try to experience the normal life there, how can I prepare?

Hi there! I have been to Brazil before, and although I chose not to take any medications prior to going, some people do believe it's best to take the anti-malaria meds. You should see your doctor a couple of months before you plan to go, so you can discuss what precautions you might want to take. Dengue fever is becoming an issue in Brazil, and especially in the rainy season. You should visit the CDC website for Brazilian travel, and there is a good list there. As far as visiting homes and restaurants, I would stay away from the water that isn't bottled, and also I would avoid ice in things. Don't eat any seafood or shrimp, as most of the local catches are from the polluted waters of Guanabara Bay, and a family member I traveled with had shrimp and got very sick for a few days. Enjoy your trip, and have fun!
