It varies a lot depending on the airline.
07_ShelbyGT500: It's a shame that you've missed the great improvements Avianca has made the last years. It's totally different from what you remember. You should try it some time.. you might change your mind.

Avianca has undergone certain changes including an increased number of flights to Europe.
The airline was recently acquired by a Brazilian millionaire and a lot has been changed - even a renovated airport and new Boieng Dreamliners.
Regardless, the cheapest time to go to Colombia would be righ after Christmas.
Ah, DO NOT TRAVEL WITH AIRMADRID TO COLOMBIA. Around 5oo Colombians were stranded at the Madrid airport for days (yes days) due to extremely poor service and bankruptcy. ( I don't know if they are still alive and kicking...)
Continental would be your best choice. They have purchased Colombian airline Aerorepublica so they fly frequently to Colombia from Europe and the US.

If you fly before Christmas, it will be very expensive. This is the most expensive time of year to fly to/from Colombia, due to the holidays.
Also, whatever you do, don't fly Avianca. That is a terrible airline, with horrible customer service, a dysfunctional website, rude customer service, excessive delays, and dirty airplanes. I've been on about 20 trips to Colombia during my lifetime and the flights on Avianca are always the worst. Fly Continental if at all possible.
I just did a check on Yahoo Travel. Leaving Heathrow on Jan 15th and flying into Bogota and returning two weeks later, the range in prices is about $1,200 to $2,000 (US Dollars). Flights are offered by Virgin Atlantic, Iberia, Lufthansa, American Airlines, Continental, Air France, British Airways and Air Canada.
Mika - I travel to Colombia ALOT, and have friends and family traveling to/from Colombia frequently. I flew Avianca 3 times this year - it IS still a crap airline!
This is the ONLY AIRLINE that can't manage to take your seat reservations in advance, whether you buy the ticket online or over the phone - no seat assignments until you arrive at the airport for check in.
The sinks in the restrooms (on the redeye flight from Bogota to JFK) were ALL clogged up and full of water half way through the flight.
They STILL have excessive delays.
I just tried to buy a ticket online for my girlfriend to come from Bogota to Miami. I spent 2 hours trying to purchase the ticket online, finally had to call to make the purchase. 3 days later, still did not have my e-ticket. Called and was told "you'll get it within the next 24 hours". 5 days later I still did not have the e-ticket. I called to complain and then I pulled the rug out from underneath them, changing my credit card number before they were able to charge me for the ticket. Got a ticket on Copa instead.
Trust me, yes, Avianca does still suck. So glad they are going to get their butts kicked when Spirit Air and Jet Blue both start flying to Bogota.

Dont fly Avianca. We used to call it avia nunca.. which means you never see it implying that they are always late. Ive found that their customer service is abysmal. They may have gotten better over the years.. but there are a lot better choices I think. and if you HATE flights full of kids.. Avianca from Miami to BOG is the WORST. Try www.skyscanner.com or www.sidestep.com these may help you. In cheap season the lowest ive paid is 600 from SLC UT to BOG and the most is over $1200.00.

It depends on when you are flying but I would say that $733 is a pretty good price for an international ticket.
