Hunting - November 2007

We all know about Dick Cheney's mishap, with pellets from his gun hitting a friend in the face. But few people know how the millionaire ranchers get their game? The grouse Cheney was after were raised in pens, then released into the "wilds" of a ranch. He was driven to the spot where the grouse were gathered, with Secret Service men and other aides along for the ride. His gun was handed to him and he took aim...but it ended in tragedy. My question is....can you really call this "hunting"? Is it fair to the game you are seeking if they are protected and fed until you decide to chase them down? The hunters I know trudge through the woods after wild game and the birds or animals have a fighting chance. Do you call this programmed, arranged target shoot a "hunting trip"?

That's what I'm in the market for.

I'm not going all out, just looking for a semiautomatic pistol that looks and acts like a 1911.

I might pay about 500 dollars.

Anyone know which, if any, Star models are on the C&R list?

Europe has

Heckler&Koch
SIG-Sauer/J.P. Sauer&Sohn
Walther
Swiss Arms
FN Herstal
Benelli
Beretta
Steyr
Glock
CZ
ect..etc..

Why are European(especially Germany) so great when it come to making firearms? Why can't the US make great fire arms like the European?

How accurate is the Savage 10fp in .308 win? I've only heard good things about this rifle. Would it be suitable for deer (.308)? Also what are the specifications? Weight, length of pull, recoil. And also, when I'm looking online, the stock looks pretty cheap and uncomfortable, does it feel good or is it bad? What kind of groupings can I expect at 100 and 200 yards? What's a good yet cheap scope for this?

I am really interested in getting a one of the Henry's Golden Boy series rifles and was just wondering if they made one of the lever action rifles strong enough to bring down big game.

I took my new rifle to the range today. Unfortunatley I was unable to zero it for 100 yards because the firing range is a small one. I ended up sighting it in to shoot 3 inches high at 50 yards. I may have to go to a better range before the deer rifle season starts on Saturday, but I am curious what you guys might know about my ammunition.

I am shooting a Federal 180 gr .300 WSM. If I am shooting 3 inches high at 50 yards where will my shots fall at 100 yards? I would appreciate a link if you find a bullet-drop chart. I have been unable to find one. What would be helpful is if someone found a chart showing my round zeroed at 50 yards, and how it will shoot at 100 yards..then I would only have to add the 3 inches.

Thanks for any help.

I'm thinking about purchasing a S&W 386 Sc/S revolver for a ccw. It's a 7 shot .357 magnum snub nosed revolver. I've never before thought about considering a revolver for carrying. IDK y but i never have.

What do you think?

I have one serious concern. overpenetration. If I use federal hydrashock ammunition doi still run a risk of overpenetration. All answers and opinions appreciated.

My buddy calls me a gut eater, but I was hunting with a bunch of guys for over 15 years. One of the traditions is to save the heart, liver, and sometimes kidneys for camp. That night we cook them (all chopped up) on a wok like disc, with onions, bell peppers, and seasoning. We make burritos, with tortillas and they are delicious. so sweet and tender. It was always done.
I no longer hunt with those guys, but I still save the liver & heart in a baggy (gallon size) after I kill my deer.
My new hunting buddy thinks I'm primitive and gross and calls me a gut eater.

Why do people get all dressed up, go to the woods and kill an innocent animal? What's the purpose? I'm not an actavist or anything but I'm curious to know why someone would kill a deer who's just doing their thing. I understand if you were lost in the woods but for fun? What pleasure do you get knowing you killed a living animal? Baseball, football, soccer are sports. Shooting a deer in the @ss is not.

I am trying to find a good/affordable 30-06 rifle I can use for hunting. I only want a bolt action/centerfire rifle.

I am looking to spend $300-500. (And then about $200 on a scope)

I would really like a "name brand" quality rifle. Thanks!
