IMO the best value air rifle is the RWS Model 34 Panther
http://www.pyramydair.com/p/rws-34-panther-air-rifle.shtml

You can buy the "combo", RWS 34 & 4x32 scope from an airgun dealer in Arkansas for $184
http://www.gunbroker.com >search RWS 34

You can buy a better rifle than the RWS M34 but you will spend at least twice the money to get one appreciable better

IMO you're better off with a .177 caliber air rifle(1,000fps) over the .22(800fps) for small game hunting. The .177 has an advantage over the .22 in accuracy, trajectory, penetration and velocity out to around 35yds then things start to even out. I only hunt rabbits with mine and the vast majority have been taken under that 35yds only a couple of times have I ever taken a rabbit at more than 40yds with my air rifle.

.177 vs .22 comparison

.177 - 1.000fps - 8.2gr=18.21fpe
.22 - 800fps - 14.5gr=20.61fpe

You need to be aware that of the fact that airgun manufacturers use very light pellets to inflate the MV(fps) of their guns - GAMO is especially notorious for using PBA pellets.

If you would like to take a look at some top of the line air rifles
Weihrauch - HW80
RWS - 350 or 54
Webley - Patriot
Beeman - R1

This is my favorite so I'm sure I'm prejudiced, and this rifle is very difficult to find, but IMO the Holy Grail of sporting air rifles is the Feinwerkbau 124D - Every once in a while you will find one of these incredible rifles up for sale. Search "Beeman FWB 124"

All of the above air rifle are "spring piston" -

There are some very powerful PCP air rifles

I have been shooting and hunting with airguns for over 45 years.

Later: I was comparing the RWS 34 which comes in both .177 & .22 - the RWS 48 is a much more powerful and much more expensive rifle, at least compare apples to apples. lol , given the choice of those two rifles, I would be using the 48 too.

I don't consider physics and or ballistics to be "theory".

I'd agree with C_F_45 on most things.

I've been offing rabbits with an air rifle since about 1980. A fast 22 is a more certain killer than a slightly faster 177, regardless of what anyones theory might say, bigger holes just work.

I have no problems anchoring a bunny with my RWS 48 in 22. I have a 34 in 177 too, but I use that for tin cans. They are surprisingly heavy and expensive, but they do the job. I go for head shots when I am certain of the range and neck when I'm not, a short neck shot is a head shot and a long one drops the pellet in the heart/lungs or trashes the shoulder. All are an immediate stop.

Dont pay any attention to those librals It is good for a boy to shoot birds, rabbits and squirrels. I know a Benjiman is a good pellet gun but I think the vilicity is way over 500 fps. And brett you cant own a 22 in Canada I dont believe. Also you might look at some break barrel guns because you dont have to pump them up therfore you can load them much faster and you can shoot at your rabbit more then once if you need to.

How much do you want to spend?
C_F_45's recommendations is probably the cheaper way to go. Both are good guns, and will do the job. If you want to save a little more money a Benjamin 392 will also do the job.
If you don't mind pumping fro the power.http://www.pyramydair.com/p/benjamin-392-pump-air-rifle.shtml
If you want a very good quality gun, and kill them at a much longer range, this one is the one.http://www.pyramydair.com/cgi-bin/model.pl?model_id=567
I've taken jacks as far out as 85 yards with mine. But mine is tuned for more power. Very accurate, once you know how to shoot it, and has decent power, even for a stock rifle. There are many guns that can take out rabbits. Just remember, power isn't any good if you can't hit the target. So, even if you get the most powerful gun, that dosen't mean that you'll kill the rabbit. Just something to think about. Hmmmm......

Beeman makes a pretty mean pellet gun, they'll hit 900 fps with a spring piston, only one pump and you are there! Very accurate weapons also. A sport model can be had for under $100 and a competition model will set you back $3,000

I guarantee you, I have trouble with rabbits on my land, and I've been dealing with your very same question, to no avail, for the past 18 months at least. Last year, I got so tired of using the least offensive weapons (paint pellets in a "wrist-rocket") and having NO luck whatsoever, that one day I got my wife's .22magnum pistol and got near one on my driveway, and they stayed away for awhile. Now their back, and I think a .22 magnum is too big for the task, so I'll be watching your answers for an answer for my problem too. I guess I could go to Academy sporting goods store near here and they might have an answer. I wonder if "C_F_45"'s answer is any good. Thanks for thinking to ask your question here. God Bless you.

A daisy 880
You can pump it up about ten times and the pellet will penetrate about an inch and a half into a book. Farther than that in flesh.

How far it penetrates depends on how many pumps you use.
Fire it within ten or fifteen minutes of pumping it up.
Do not leave it sitting pumped up. I ruined one that way.
