The two Derringers at the top of the photo are either Colt reproductions or Butler Associates reproductions (modern copies) of the Colt Fourth Model Single Shot Derringers made by Colt Firearms in the 1870's..They are "Pivoting Barrel" or whats called a "Thuer Action" Derringers and the barrel swings to the right to open and load..They were made in only 22 Short Caliber.2 1/2" Barrel. They came in Blue, Nickel,Gold Plated finish, and had Walnut or Mother of Pearl (fake) Grips
They sold NEW for about $80 each and even came in sets of (2) in a wooden presentation case....Perfectly LEGAL to own, and still are in most states but California and *Maryland
*22 Short caliber has never been a "Gang" caliber and never will be.....lol, but they were tiny, inexpensive and easy to conceal.
The double barrel 22 Derringer (Bottom Left) is a 2 Shot 22 Derringer, and an import if I remember correctly, but for the life of me I can't remember who made it. I've seen and held several in my hands in my lifetime, both as a Cop and a Gun Dealer, and can remember they were cheap, imported and made from Pot Metal.Maybe it will come to me later....lol
* Having one of either, you would be more of a threat with a "steak knife". Shoot someone with either of these and they might notice and get mad.......

Both are Derringers. The top one is a single barrel, single shot Derringer and the bottom one is a two-shot double barrel derringer. These are NOT illegal so long as they are not imported (that is, made here) and if you can legally own/possess or carry a handgun in your State. They are not practical except as a last resort weapon of opportunity or if you are a gang member to jack someone or just kill or injury someone at close range.
Four shot pistols like these ones are called 'Pepperboxes.' Problem with these types of pistols is that they don't reliable fire the barrel in the consecutive order they are supposed to. Sometimes one or the other barrel will misfire; sometimes two or more of the barrels will fire at once. Two-shot Derringers are made in up to .45 Long Colt/.410 gauge, and the Pepperboxes in up to .357 Magnum. I've seen some old WWII vintage single shot Derringers in .45 acp. In my estimation the single-shot Derringers are the most reliable.
Best.

There are many types of derringers that fit this description-"break like a shotgun". They fire two shots and usually have two barrels-one over the other. Here is a picture of one in 9mm.

A 22 would be even smaller.
These are not in and of themselves illegal, unless you live somewhere draconian where handguns are banned, or unless you unlawfully conceal it on yourself, in your car, etc.
