I believe that you are looking for a thompson center "encore" gun. It is a single shot that you can change the barrels from 22 to 12 gauge to anything. they are an excellent brand and of good quality, here is a link to their site.

.22: I can carry more ammo, I rarely need ear protection, There is almost no recoil, Its effective to more than 200 yards (depends on size of target), Its more accurate than shotgun shot or slugs, For survival purposes I can hunt any animal, from a rabbit to a deer or cow for food. and I love .22 rifles over my 20 gauge shotgun, I don't think I'd like a 12 gauge more than the 20 I have now.

It's a combination 12 guage shotgun with a built in 22 cal. rifle. Most of them are single shot over and under. There's the shotgun barrel on the bottom and attached or welded to the top of it is a 22 bore. You typically break it down to load. At that point you have a choice to stick a 12 guage round in or a 22 round or both. Hope I was helpful.

I believe that bloodshotcyclops is right. It is an over/under. It has a 12 guage shotgun and a .22 caliber rifle. Each are a single shot. They are both built into the same rifle. One barrel over the other. Hunters that use them are the ones who want a variable weapon to use in unpredictable hunting conditions. Lets say that you are dove hunting and see a rabbit that you think would make for a good dinner. The .22 can be used to get the rabbit while you were depending on the 12 guage for the dove hunting.

He might be looking for a 12 gauge shot gun with a 22inch barrel. Not familar with a 22 12 gauge.

There is a 22 caliber rifle.
There is a 12 gauge shotgun.
I've never heard of a 22 12 ga. shotgun and I've owned and been around guns all of my life. You should go to a sports store like Acadamy and talk to someone. There are many types of 12 gauge shotguns such as pump, over/under, double barrel, semi-auto, etc.
It really depends what he's going to use it for. Hunting (bird, deer, turkey, etc.), home protection, skeet, clay targets- they all use different types.
If it's a 22 cal. rifle he wants, you'll have different types of those also.
As far as brands go, Remington makes the best in my opinion.
Edit- I stand corrected after reading previous posts.

A 22/12 gauge would be an over an under.
Savage arms makes them. I own one and love it as it is great for small game hunting. Not real cheap though as they run around $500 I think.
