Depends on what state. Most gun stores sell handguns and hunting rifles or shotguns. If you are in a state that allows assault rifles, you may see these. To buy a gun you have to get a background check and stuff.

ryan c and road hazz both gave you very good answers. What a gun store sells depends on lot of factors. Some are large stores and sell many accessories and even hunting clothes so they have large inventories with most of the brands of guns including long guns. They would also have the military style of guns because that is what customers want. The Box stores will have only a small amount of guns and fewer military styles guns as the big companies are run by liberal thinking people that believes that guns are evil if they look different than a hunting gun.
The small shops will have fewer guns of course so they will concentrate on hunting guns that sell the best and hope to make up for the lower price by selling ammunition and accessories. Again as the others said the state laws will determine what stores can sell. Since California adopted a micro serial number on the firing pin law, several gun companies have stopped sending any guns or selling any guns to California residents or even California police departments. Soon there will be no gun stores in California and many gun owners will just move to states that allow them to buy and own guns.

I live in the socialist republic of New York state, which has been throughly sullied by unconstitutional actions of the Bloomberg media giant and Rudy Giuliani, and kept that idiotic federal weapons ban active after it expired.

While it's still legal to own some firearms, I can't have an AR15(civilian M16) with a flash hider, standard gas block, lightweight adjustable stock(so the girl I live with who has shorter arms can't comfortably hold it). That doesn't keep me from having an AR15 that fires the exact same cartridge and is serves the same function as the one without all the features on it. The .223 that it fires is considered by many to be a varmint cartridge, suitable for nothing bigger than a coyote. It's pretty good at long range, but doesn't have enough effect for hunting deer or larger game.

The AK47 you asked about was banned from importation, though if you look around at gun shows up here there are some that were imported before the gun ban and do have pre-ban features, such as a pistol grip, high capacity magazines, flash hider, bayonet lug, and the like. They're expensive and old, and usually pretty heavily used. Otherwise, going to the local gun store will be 99% hunting, clays, and plinking rifles, there are a few tactical shotguns and rifles in the back where they keep them under lock and key, and only let trusted customers handle them.

As far as hunting with these rifles go, the AR15 platform is a very popular varminter rifle for gophers, woodchucks, and coyotes. The same model I have, the Bushmaster XM15E2S is very popular, as it's highly accurate, well built, and very dependable. I've fired hundreds of rounds out of it with only a few jams caused by a brass catcher not letting a round eject fully(as I reload, and those small cartridges can be pretty hard to find once they fall into the grass).

As far as crime goes, there are much better rifles get that look nothing like the ones any military is using. The new Browning BAR shorttrac rifle in .300WSM would be a great rifle to use for both hunting or some kind of crime. Unfortunately, an effective hunting rifle is oftentimes just as effective on a human, but usually doesn't look nearly as scary.

((Sarge, the Republic of Kalifornia's microprinting law will go into effect as of 1Jan2010, and is likely to be overturned before then, as it's nearly unenforcable to make sure every gun has a serial number present in the chamber, and it's very expensive to print a number on something that can imprint brass, aluminum, or steel casings sufficiently while handling the recoil of the casing and holding up to more than a few rounds. Also, if someone were to commit a crime, using a simple brass catcher or picking up the brass would make this law completely futile. The 'ballistic fingerprinting' program that was already passed into law in some states has been an utter failure, and after several billion dollars thrown into that has not been responsible for solving, or even helping solve one single crime. Pouring money into government projects to prevent guns is not going to help at all to prevent violence. All this money should be going to help prevent violence from happening to people, not to prevent people from owning a gun to defend from that violence.))

It depends on the state laws. In NH, they allow sale of every kind of firearm and silencers as long as you have the right license. But drive a half hour south to the people's republic of Massachusetts and they have actually made a list of guns you can't buy because they "look scary". I'm not making this up, you can buy a deadlier gun with more bullet capacity than a lesser gun because someone who knew nothing about guns made the list and just pickes the ones she found 'threatening'.

As far as hunting, yes that is a reason people buy guns. Self defense is another. Cops must also buy thier guns from stores in some places.

Hunting remember isn't just a sport for some people in America. I personally have had guys work for me that have needed the meat they got from hunting to feed thier families. It might be just a sport in the cities, but out in the country things can be different.

This is a complicated issue. One that shouldn't be taken lightly. People on both sides have very strong and heartfelt opinions about the matter. Obviously, you can tell i'm pro-freedom. From the wording of your assignment, I'll bet your teacher is anti-rights. The important choice if that is true is : Do I want to just say what they want to hear to get a good grade, or do I want to form my own opinion and risk geting failed. I'd just play along if I were you...

Most gun stores only sell sporting guns.
Like any retailer, they sell what the customer
in the area wants.
There's always some kind of background check.
Full "Military grade weapons" are very hard to get.
The Fed.s require a special license and a deep
background check with high fees attached.
Most States add their own restrictions.
The short answer is:
you don't just buy a gun anymore.

It depends on what is legal in your state. "Military grade weapons like the AK-47 and M-16 " are fully automatic firearms and there for more heavily regulated at the Federal Level and therefore not normally found in just any gun store.
Now if you are asking about the Civilian copies which are semi-automatic those can be found in your neighborhood gun store if your state allows that type of firearm to be sold.

As for the conditions to buy most firearms again depending on which state you're in there is a dealers record of sale and a BATFE form 4437 which will be filled out before you take posession of the firearm. If it is a "ful auto" such as a real AK-47 or M-16 there is substantially more paperwork and waiting to be done.

As for why people buy these types of firearms, some collect them for numerous reasons, some may have used this type of have been exposed to them during military service and prefer them, some do hunt with them (where legal to do so).
Some compete with them in shooting events and the reasons go on and on. I owned an AR-15 and used it for DCM shooting matches as well as recreational shooting and some small game hunting.

Hope this helps

In most states handguns, rifles, and shotguns ranging from single-shot all the way to high capacity semi-automatics (excluding shotguns). Most states allow for high capacity magazines and semi-auto ONLY miitary rifles. Some dealers do have Class 3 status that allows them to sell select-fire rifles and machine pistols (You might erroniously refer to them as "machine guns") but this far less common due to hassles and the fact that Class 3 sales are low and hard to come by for a dealer due to federal/local requirements.
Most people buy guns for recreation (hunting and target shooting), collecting, or for self-defense. A lot more handguns get sold for the want (sport, collecting) than what you think. This has no bearing on legitimacy concerns, but I became a handgun shooter more out of fascination and dedication than the perceived need of self-defense (not that I would refrain from that duty, however). "Gun people" (like me) are into to firearms because we want to be involved with them.

Semi Automatic civilian legal rifles, handguns, shotguns and accessories. M-16's, and other full-auto weapons are sold from Class III dealers and are transferable to civilians after alot of paperwork approval.

Prior to purchasing, you must fill out a form 4473, pass a NICS background check and have a state issued I.D.

You can legally purchase a Semi-auto only AR-15, AK-47 (with a US made receiver), FAL, Uzi, etc which are all military firearms from local gun shops.

I have taken a Whitetail buck with a 6.8mmSPC AR-15 (M-16 lookalike)in north Texas.

Most gun stores & gun shops will sell new and used firearms. As for the military replicas only a small handful of places stock them and that is only because of no (or not much in sales) demand.

Stores like Wal-Mart, Mills Fleet Farm, K-Mart will sell Hunting firearms and places like, *****, Gander Mt. and Cabela's sell Target & Hunting plus handguns.

AR-15, the civiian version of the M16, bought mine at a gun store secifically for hunting. It's the best turkey rifle ever, much more accurate than the ruger's ranch gun, albeit you do look a little "ramboesque" carrying it out in the bush.
