I know several women, I secretly call them the Karate cult, that have all started doing Karate within the last year or two. They spar with 12 year old boys, get yelled at by the sensei, then have to pay top dollar to get a new color belt every 3 months. They're really not even learning any practical self defense strategies. Do they just like being reprimanded and treated like a child? Does it have to do with searching for a father figure? What the hell?

if you do then what do you think he would need to enter to the UFC (even though i don't think that'll ever happen) what style would he need to complement his wrestling (real wrestling, in case you don't know he won a gold medal in olimpic wrestling) and how would he do and use his wrestling as an advantage.

A person in another question wrote "It will take time to develop a competition and sparring team. You first need to focus on getting your program up and running. Remember that the cream always rises to the top and you pull your demo and sparring teams from the cream." as a part of his answer to the original asker's question.

Now my question is - do you believe anybody, even a total beginner, can become part of that cream, if they work hard at it - or does talent the only thing that counts?

In my experience they all make at least one of the following mistakes:

Instructors ridicule students.
They dont' act like you're a paying customer.
They use foul language.
They use intimidation.
They beat on students.
They disregard student's safety.
They neglect instruction in favor of horseplay.
They play loud music.
They don't make kids programs FUN.
They're never wrong.
They don't welcome questions.

What is the deal with this?
How do you find one that actually respects you, your money and your desire for instruction?

What is a good Judo throw to counter someone who is tall and locking out their arms. I'm short, stocky and strong. I often have problems getting throws on tall guys who lock arms or stiffen arms out. I try to break the arms and close the distance but sometimes when I do this they attempt to throw and I lose the distance. What type of throws would you all use?

Alright well I'm a novice at these things. I'm looking for a martial arts dojo, I don't particularly mind what art it is, all I ask for it to be is legit.

Now I'm not asking if anyone knows any good dojos since I'm not counting on anyone who will answer me lives in AZ and in my city (Not going to tell that much). Rather, if there are any tips to how to look for dojos. Are there any reliable locater-type sites for martial arts dojos?

Also, feel free to give me some opinions on what art I should start with. I'm interested in Capoeira, Judo and muay thai..

I'm 32 years old and for some odd reason I have an urge to learn to stand on my hands and balance that way for a few seconds. I am increasing my upper body strength but i should have enough at this time. I have been balancing my entire frame by leaning against a dancers stretching bar (horizontal)and i also have had a friend hold my legs up for me. Any other ideas and how long might htis take? How much practice?

I use to do Taekwondo for a few years, and actually learnt a lot about defending myself, but sparring against other women was fine, and some what evenly matched, and the women, really get into it,....i also learnt other styles of martial arts, and i used to spar with my partner who is a black belt, and some of the other guys, and it's amazing how the guys are actually afraid almost to make any real contact when you're a woman because they think they will hurt you, so you can never sparr fully with a guy if this is the case how can a woman have any real idea of how to use their martial arts skill effectively to defend herself against a man...is it because the guys are afraid of hurting us women when sparring?.......i think we're a lot tougher than you guys care to think.
