Its a Russian Martial art... It is designed to be highly adaptive and practical, training using drills and sparring instead of set kata. It focuses mainly on the six body levers (elbows, neck, knees, waist, ankles, and shoulders), while also teaching pressure point application and takedowns. Systema is best known as being a martial art employed by some Russian Spetsnaz units.

They train this **** on the prison inmates!!! and by that I mean kill them and break their bones to get to feel what it really is like!!! YIKES!

they way I look at it... if its good enough for those crazy *** Spetsnaz its good enough for me!

As with most martial arts, it is only as effective as the person using it. For those that are willing to put in the itme and effort to learn it properly, it is highly effective. It was one of the arts I was required to learn as part of my early training and have used it effectively in both no holes barred competition and in self-defense situations. Because it doesn't have the kind of formal, regimented stances as some other styles, it is deceptive in that opponents that have never encountered it won't know what you are going to do, or where it's coming from. Also, the nature of the training methods accustomes the practitioner to the close quartes nature of combat and makes it so that they are not nervous or scared when confronted by an attacker, allowing them to have a quicker reaction. If you have the opportunity to train with someone that knows what they are doing, go for it... and from what I have found, if someone that shouldn't be teaching the style is, and the "REAL" people find out, they usually don't teach very long after....

www.bullshido.net did an investigation into systema and the claims made by it, the above is the result.

Judge for yourself.

I don't have any personal experience with systema except that I've seen them teach seminars at a place where I go to cross train (the fighthouse in NYC, they rent space to people who want to teach seminars and classes).

ive heard people describe systema as "some of it can work, but the effort required far exceeds the benefits". in short- you can become a more effective fighter by using another style. ryabko's videos and seminars are so blatantly bs its a joke. compliant ukes flinging themselves around do not a martial art make.

If you asked a trained expert in this composite version of a martial art developed by Russian special forces, the answer is "very". Ask most people who know about it, and the answer is "very". Ask a 60 year old Shoalin Monk, and the answer would be "a chain is only effective as it's weakest link".

The effectiveness of any martial art boils down to 2 thing:
1. the instructor (how it's taught) &
2. yourself
"You only get out what you put in" if you take any martial art seriuosly the benefits reaped are high, if your wishy-washy then what you get out of it is practically nothing.

It is a term describing any of the Russian block fighting arts.

like kung fu contains many styles.

There is alot of controversy involving it, and I would suggest finding out by giving it a go. you will know whether it is worth while pretty soon.
