A person in another question wrote "It will take time to develop a competition and sparring team. You first need to focus on getting your program up and running. Remember that the cream always rises to the top and you pull your demo and sparring teams from the cream." as a part of his answer to the original asker's question.

Now my question is - do you believe anybody, even a total beginner, can become part of that cream, if they work hard at it - or does talent the only thing that counts?

Some people have natural talent that helps them excel to the top faster than others but anyone can be the cream of the crop with enough work.

I don't know if I have natural ability, if it's because I work hard, or both, but I always excel in the martial arts schools I train in.

I have been teaching Martial arts off and on for about eight years and have seen students walk in the door with natural ability and never do anything with it. Some of my best students had to work hard but they got to the top and some worked hard with the natural ability they had.

To answer your question. Natural ability is nice but not necessary. I would rather have a top level student that had to work at it. They are more appreciative of their skill.

I hope that helps. Be Blessed.

Well hard work is important. Even the greatest athletes had to practice hard to get to the top. Of course having a knack for what it is you're doing does help. Still, never underestimate hard work.
