Specifically for a Tae Kwon Do school. How much is the tuition? Also, how much is the equipment?

Hi. I'm a 16 year old male student who has always been interested in the martial arts. I lift weights and, in the summer, play "casual" tennis. Do you think it's too late for me to start, or is it just as good to start now as it would have been to start earlier?

Where do I look for an instructor/school? How can i find out what styles are taught in my area? How do I know that the school(s) that I'm looking at are accredited? How do I know that the school(s) that I'm looking at concentrate more on competition than on the art itself?

Thanks a lot!

I have a bet going right now that I cant take down an Aikido Black Belt. Rules are nothing happens till I lay a hand on him and I get 3 tries to ground him. I'm just wondering if anyone can suggest a move or specific art/style to use. Any suggestions?

The rules for the sparring I do are:
Kicking allowed above groin anywhere (including head and face)
(Punching only to torso-not to head)
Round goes for 2 minutes and whoever scores most points wins
OR You can win by knockout by kicking to head.

I was at a tournament yesterday and got really tired half way through my second fight.
What is the best way to train (Both strength and cardiovascular) for this type of sparring?

PS I am 15 years old, about 175cm tall and weigh nearly 70 kg (Sorry don't know in pounds)

please don't give me diet tips as I can only eat what my mother feeds me

I have trouble with this move, it seems hard to get your foot to twist while kicking. I end up smashing my toes sometimes :( Any tips? I seem to be able to hit much harder with my weaker leg which suggests my stronger foot is twisting better and helping me hit.

Yes, I'm getting deep here. Too deep for "answers" perhaps. Many Westerners are stuck in the scientific materialistic world, and will never get the "mystical" part of martial arts, even seeking to get rid of it altogether. Read the first paragraph here: http://members.shaw.ca/tmanifold/remembering_bruce_tegner.htm. Many Westerners are also stuck in a materialistic kind of Judeo-Christian ethic, and seek to avoid the Eastern martial arts, because they can find none of their own black and white good or truth in the things which do not line up with their understandings of the teachings of scripture. (Perhaps because they do not seek it, IMHO). I think there is truth in both East and West, and that the martial arts do indeed and should combine mind with body with spirit. But it is difficult for me as a Westerner raised with the teachings we have here. Or is it truly difficult for all peoples?

All right. Discuss. Please? :)

To me, a martial art is a system of combat for use in battle/war only put into an art form (hence the word martial). This means that martial arts can use any weapon, including the body. Martial arts are much more than self-defense, but can be used as such. Sports are games with rules and regulations for safety. Real martial arts dont have rules. Are you seriously going to say in a real fight "sorry, you cant do that becuase its cheating". What defenatly makes martial arts not sports is the fact of spiritual development. Real martial artists are beyond a mere athlete. Martial artists strengthen their spirit to increase their fighting potential. This MMA isnt a real martial art. All they do is grab their opponent and pound their face in. Thats an art? Many will say that martial arts wont work in a real fight because they dont know what real martial arts are. I am very frustrated on this topic because such a complex and beautiful thing is dying out. Please help me out here.

I'm not sure what kinda takedown this is I think it might me judo. I was clinching I had one underhook and my opponents wrist out to the side. I created some space and pulled his arm straight, then I straightened his arm, and tripped his leg while using his straight arm to push his upper body back. It worked like a charm and I got side mount.

What is this called? How can I refine this technique. If he were to counter with a hook or uppercut, what could I do to avoid that and still get him down?
