I have a bet going right now that I cant take down an Aikido Black Belt. Rules are nothing happens till I lay a hand on him and I get 3 tries to ground him. I'm just wondering if anyone can suggest a move or specific art/style to use. Any suggestions?

You haven't said if you know any martial arts? That's really important because if you don't, I'll even bet that you can't take down an Aikido Black Belt. You have to know a little about the art of Aikido and you also have to know some type of Martial Art or even wrestling. If you don't know anything then your best bet would be to shoot for a double-leg takedown as quickly as you can. Good Luck.

It's not the art itself, but the individual. I've seen karate-ka's take down judo-ka's, different styles of kung fu winning against different styles of karate and vice versa, etc.

You may want to try the likes of MMA as a full contact martial art to use full force/brute force to get the black belt down. However MMA isn't to everyones liking. You also have the consider what style of Aikido it is, the earlier version of Aikido was more like the karate that we know today, the more later versions of Aikido is more what we expect Aikido to be (Aikido evolved with the age of the creator of Aikido).

If you want to get any Martial Artist on the ground, the best way is to concentrate and study for years to get up to a certain level. You may try to surprise the black belt by doing a sweep, but please remember doing any technique incorrectly could end up hurting you.

Seriously dude. When you make a bet you can beat someone you should already know you can beat them not make a bet and then start to train and get ideas. You should already be confident in the skills you have. Is this guy also going to give you a few years to train as well because it sounds like you need it. On the other hand the black belt should have never take a bet like that. he should have also been confident in his skills to never even have to stoop that low to prove the worth of his chosen art.

I agree with 'Shotokan1' - its the individual martial artist and also his style (and other styles he may have studied) that matters, not just what techniques work against a particular style.

If you are already a martial arts practitioner who is familiar with Japanese arts like judo/jujitsu/shoriji-kempo or other chinese kung fu grappling-type arts, and this challenge is a friendly one, I suggest that you research on Aiki-Jujitsu for techniques on neutralising or reversing some of the Aikido moves and countermoves. If you are not already trained, and this person you are facing is a good practitioner, just have fun - you'll lose the bet anyway.

haahah chances r ur doomed, but Judo is a similar style, try it......
tripping techniques in this style can take down anyone any size too. I know from experience. Its not hard to learn too. Just look and learn from vids or pics, Just learn like 5-10 moves and memorize them hard, when the time come u know how to reverse his moves into your techniques.

Get as good as you possibly can with Thai kicks. If he's just standing there for you, kick him. It may be interesting to know that this does not count as laying a hand on him.

I know many Aikido people have no idea how to stop shoot or other wrestling take down. So try go for his legs. Here's a site that may help.

Two options that I would suggest is to study Aikido for years. The best way to beat an art is to understand it your self.
The second way is to do something totally unexpected.

Good luck.

Fake a punch and come in for a single or double leg takedown. He knows your going for his legs .... fake the punch to draw his attention from his 'lower zone'. Is he able to fight back after you touch him? Start behind him and sink in a rear naked choke .... tightly and quickly. If done correctly .... you'll not only take him down, you'll put him to sleep!

Best of Luck!
