No, he's actually a good age, between 6 and 9 is a real good age to begin learning because he's more able to comprehend things better and more attentive without being totally distracted by everything around him.

and he'd still be young enough to progress at a decent rate so he may reach his black belt in to his mid to late teens I'd say that he prob'ly could (not saying that he will, but the possibility is good if he really sticks with it) that he could attain his 1st or 2nd degree black belt by the time he's 18.

so no he's not too old, there're many people well older than him in their mid to late 30's and even 40's taking Martial Arts and attaining their black belts. So he's Got an excellent chance, especially if you enroll him in a good school

9 is probably a good age to start. It' s never too late to start something. Elvis didn't take up martial arts until he was around 30!

Not at all. My younger brother started martial arts when he was 11 and is doing fine 8 years later.

No, actually waiting until they are older is better. I began Kenpo when I was 14, and watching that classes that the little kids were in it was obvious that they were only there because their parents made them go. Being older will allow him to better understand the real teachings of marshal arts. Not just the fighting but the disaplin, and restraint. It is more of a study in personality than just fighting.

Look at this kid (sorry for a horrible quality pic):

Here's youngest clear pic I can find of him:

Guess what he became after 13 years of hard training:

So if a poor 9 years old boy from 3rd world can become world's most respected stand up fighter before he's even 25, then NO!!!!!!! Your son isn't too old to start!

as has been stated MANY times on here, NO.... you are never too old to start.... I started when I was 16 and now am 24. That little space up above "Search for questions" is the best place for initial answers.

no way! I have seen people in their 50's doin that stuff! There really isn't an age limit on martial arts, just depends on whether you feel you or your child can physically do it!
