I just bought a new Trek "Hybrid" bike for commuting to work. The town where I bought it is a 90 minute drive. As soon as I tried out the bike on hills, it became evident that it would not shift into the lowest gear possible for hill climbing because the chain will not engage the smallest front chainring.

I want to adjust it myself, but I am not certain of the following instructions, as taken from http://www.bike-manual.com/brands/trek/om/hybrid/index.html -

"- Front derailleur clamp

1. Shift the chain onto the smallest front chainring and the largest cassette cog."

I have never heard the terminology "cassette cog" when speaking of bicycle parts. From the context of the sentence I am guessing they are referring to the multiple gears/sprockets lateral to the rear wheel axel, but the name "cassette cog" just does not seem to fit this part of the bike. Why is it called a "cassette" ?

Couple of notes: First, I'm starting training for a triathlon and I know that bikes can get very expensive. Second, I know I'm going to need to get it fitted. Third, this will be my first road bike and I'm probably going to buy a tri-bike at some point later down the line once I get further along in my training. Essentially, I'm not looking to break the bank at this point, but I want a bike that will be effective for training in various environments (e.g. city, hills, flat roads, etc.) over the next year or so.

You know, the bar that goes from under the handlebars to below the seat. I mean, wouldn't it be more logical if it were reversed? Is is there something I'm missing here? Serious answers only, please!

if so, what kind of trainer should i get that will simulate going to spin class?
are you able to adjust the tention as if you are going down a hill( very fast) or up a hill( very tough/slow)?

what brand/ type would be the best for this, i consider myself intermediate. i am looking for the trainers you attatch to the back wheel of your regular bike, not a stationary bike.

thanks

i am in the market for a new bike, which one should i get? the mongoose blackcomb, or the mongoose xr250? they both seem very good, but the blackcomb is 90$ more, but has 24 gears, compared to 21 on the xr250. for any bike experts or anyone who owns one of these bikes, please help me! look online at walmart.com, because i am not good at making choices like this!

I asked this question in another category, I got good answers just wondering what I would get from the cycling community???
I am looking to drop a few pounds and don't want to lose muscle mass. I am not over weight, just looking to increase speed on bike. I have been reading about whey protein and was wondering of the pros/cons of using a protein supplement? Female 5'10" I eat well, brown rice, pasta chicken, salmon, leafy veggies and riding about 100+ miles per week, need to move the process of building more lean muscle mass and dropping pounds. :) Should I add a protein shake as a snack? Replace a meal?
