A Trek 7.2 is a great entry level cross or hybrid bike. It is light but takes the bumps too. It's about $400. If you wanted to pay less then that the weight would go up. Could try looking for a used one but buyer beware.

Personally I would choose a road bike for ease and comfort. If you have any belly at all make sure the handle bars are high enough. You should be able to pick up a used ten speed for the purpose. Good luck and be safe. Your heart and legs will thank you.

The only thing that I can come up with is one of the flat handle-bar hybrid bikes. They are street bikes with mountain bike gears. Many can be had for not a whole lot of money. Like anything else concerning bikes, visit some bike shops or good quality outdoor stores.
