I want a cheap bicycle just to get me around. I would like to spend around £80-£100. My budget is very tight. What type of bike should I go for?

I have now decided I can spend roughly £80-£165 at max!

A great many places will offer you a budget bike for this. They will have full suspension, steel frames and usually disks. Do not touch with a ten foot barge pole.

You are not going to get a great bike for this price range, but I would not get a suspension bike. Go for a rally or similar road bike. You are probably stuck with a steel frame, but it will probably have a better design than your budget job. If possible, get branded gears, like shimano, but these can be upgraded later if you don't.

As well as e-bay, there are quite a few internet sites. Places like evans might be a bit pricy, but you might try leisure lakes, or paulscycles. You might also consider Claude Butler, or their parent company, falconcycles.

Luck.

New £80-£100 bikes are, like a lot of people have said, not likely to be very good. If you are determined to buy new, look for a V braked bike with no suspension. Disks and suspension in this price range will be real junk. Be prepared to throw away the supplied tyres and brake blocks, and replace them with ones that actually work. Tyres in particular seem to be made of some waxy rubbery compound that doesn't grip and make riding difficult.

I would buy a good second hand bike of a known make (in fact I did so last autumn). There were lots around in your price range, some hardly used at all.

well if you want a well made bicycle that is top of the line definatley go to a Trek bike store. Best made bikes ever and are really light but they do a a high cost but if you want a cheap one i wouldnt go to Walmart or something i would go to Sportmart or Sports Authority or maybe even Dicks Sporting Goods those are the best options for a good cheap bike BUT the best option of all would be EBAY you will definatley find a good very cheap bike there

Dont go and dont get, cheap bikes ie under £300 just end up costing more in spare parts etc and end up costing more than a £300 bike, See evans cycles or mbr for details

As you said a bicycle that can get you around.Look for an adult/childs bicycle from your local shop.Your budget aint tight you can get one for 80 pounds easily enough. It does not matter about the make.If you are unsure ask the owner of the shop. You can go on ebay.
