Its quite normal. Sometimes, after changing the pad on a car, you will notice a burning smell for the first 50 or so miles. The white stuff, or sometimes copper oil, can be smeared on, but I wouln't bother. Just ride through it as your pads bed in.

Also, One of the answers talked about turning a nut. Fine if you have a cable type. If hydraulic, don't touch unless you have worked with this type before, otherwise you might dump brake fluide all over the kitchen carpet and/or get air in the system. Not good, as you then have to learn how to bleed brakes.

If you just purchased and are worried, ask the shop to look at it. But they are right, your brakes are bedding in, you will be fine.

Luck

If your local bike shop mechanic says it is ok, you should trust him, especially if you are not experienced with bikes. Most bikes need the pads to be worn down a little before riding for better braking quality. If you dont, then there should be two screws near the brake bads that you could unscrew a little to move the bads away from the disk. However, I wouldnt recommend it. I suggest you keep it as is. It may seem like its harder to ride, but hey look on the bright side, the more you have to pedal, the strong youll be!

Disc rubbing is sort of normal. As long as it is not completely rubbing and braking the bike, ride them for a bit. You don't mention which type of brakes you have. Hydraulics are more self adjusting than cable actuated discs.

Avid BB7 mech disc has some kind of dials that let you adjust the distance from the pads to the rotor.

You should find a gnurled nut on the cable to the brake. Loosen it to release the adjustment. Otherwise release the cable tightness by putting a bit of slack into the cable adjustment.
