Want to buy a bike but haven't owned one since my BMX back in the day...

So now i'm faced with mountain bikes (front, rear or duel suspension or fixed frame), urban, street, racing (road?), hybrid and probably a few others.

I want to ride the few k's from home to gym (instead of car), and occasionally to the office. So road mostly but maybe the odd trail at weekends. Also worry a bit about racing bikes not coping with pavements and other obstacles in case i need to get 'creative' on route.

Any ideas??

Hi, I'm 6'3 and am after a bike just to use for a general ride around the park, road wherever. will maybe do some off road but not alot. I have found a mountain bike which seems ok but am wondering about sizing. following is a bit of a description.

# 26" Alloy dual-suspension frame
# Shimano front and rear derailleur with 7 speed index
# 21 Speed Bike
# Shimano shifters
# Zoom steel suspension fork and handlebars.
# Zoom shock absorber forks
# Linker alloy V-Brake and half alloy brake lever

mainly just wondering if this size would be ok for someone my height.

thanks very much for any feedback

I currently own a Haro Mirra Flair but I want to upgrade it now I like my forks and chain and pedals etc but I think my frames a little heavy and so I want to change just the frame is this possible and how would I go about it? Are there any books or sites that can help me to do this and how do I know that the parts I currently have will fit onto my new frame?

Two weeks ago I bought a new bike as I need to lose 20lb. Today I was able to go 23 miles but it took me three hours. I have not ridden a bike since I was 16, I am now 25. I was 45lb overweight, but I lost around half of it. Have 20 to go, this is when I bought the bike. I see no difference on the scales yet, as I've only gone 85 miles so far since getting the bike. It is a mountain bike, which is heavier, so it is slower, should I have bought a road bike, I am riding it mainly on country roads, some of them are rough. My question is does this sound like I am riding fast enough to lose weight. I mean three hours, my knee started to hurt I could have gone another hour. According to some website I burned 1500 calories. Which is a start because I need to burn 75000 by december. The math there is 3300 calories x 20lb odd and the speed I ride will prob increase. I am sort of unfit. Any advice?

I just got into cycling and got my first bike yesterday. I rode it a little but it requires clipless peddals. So I needed shoes. I went to the REI, but the good sidis were to expensive and the other shoes didnt fit. I decided to get shoes off of ebay. I was looking and bid on a few pair of shoes wich I thought would increase the liklihood of getting a pair of shoes. I won a pair of shoes which are sidis, I dont know wich kind for 155 including shiping. Then I was still the the leading bider in the other catagory. The other shoes are teh dominator 5s. I dont know what to do if I win both. I could retract my bid, Or I could win the shoes and see wich fit better and trie to sell the other shoes. Or I could Just keep both. I dont know what to do please help. Also I fit a 44, but I have to tighten the straps all the way. The sidi dominator 5s are 43.5 so I dont know if they will even fit. Is it worth the risk buying both shoes. Also If I do I may loose money because of shipping.

Whats that thing you can buy so someone can stand on the back of the bicycle while you pedal? I know you attach it to the rear wheel area. Where can I buy it online and how much?

I'm looking at used hardtail Specialized MTB's and was wondering how a newer (2005-2007) Hardrock compares with an older Rockhopper (2001-2002) and the years in between. Is the older Rockhopper frame any better than a newer Hardrock frame? If not, would an older Stumpjumper frame be any better than a newer Hardrock. What about weight differences? Are the frames comparable and should I just be focusing more on components and condition of the bike?

What about XC, Comp, and Sport designations? Are the frames the same on these, with only different components?

Any related tips/recommendations or info?

Thanks

I am looking for advice on new handlebars and a stem for my 2005 Giant TCR Composite 2 bike. I definitely want carbon bars and am looking at the Easton EC90 SLX bars. I'm a 5'4'' woman at 120 lbs so I'm not concerned about flex on these high end bars (unless you think I should be), but should I go for the alloy or carbon stem? I will want a short reach with a slight or flat rise (don't like the negative rise stems). Any suggestions? Money is not an object, I want something that is worth the money though.

How do you put a chain on a bike without buying a tool to do it?
Someone told me that you can take the links out with a centre punch?
My mate took a chain off his bike without taking the links out?
Any advice please? I need to get my bike working ASAP.

I took up cycling to work two weeks ago - 25 minutes each way every day - but since then have lost pretty much all interest or ability in the bedroom. At first I thought it was just my fitness catching up, but today I've decided to stop cycling until I figure out the problem (the change has been so quick and so dramatic that I'm certain cycling has caused it). When I got the bike, I had it properly fitted for me.

Obviously this isn't too common -- otherwise no guys would ride their bike. Maybe I'm just particularly susceptible to the pressures of a bike seat (I'm 26, not overweight and very fit so I don't think the extra exercise is making too much difference).

My question is whether any of you have experienced this or had friends in similar situations? Is the effect likely to be permanent? How many days (of no cycling) should it take to recover? Should I go see a doctor now? Do the alternative seats I have read about on google searches make any real difference?

I'm looking for a good urban commuter bike that's tough, light, fast.

What's the best bang for the buck?

So far I've tried the following:

1.) Trek 7.5 - Nice light fast clean-looking bike. Uncomfortable seat. Very balanced ride.
Trek 7.5 FX

2.) Cannondale Bad Boy - Best looking bike. Kinda slow. Priciest bike of the bunch - out of my budget.

3.) K2 Astral - Very light and fast bike. Not sure how tough it is. The red color sucks.
http://www.k2bikes.com/index.php?brand=K2&series=ROAD&type=FLAT%20BAR%20ROAD&model=ASTRAL%203.0

4.) Specialized Sirrus. - Cool minimal look. Very light. So so ride. Cheapest bike.

Between these bikes, I'm leaning towards the Trek 7.5.

Which one of these has the best frame and components?

Are there any other bikes I should try?

Gary can hike on level ground 3 miles an hour faster than he can on uphill terrain. Yesterday, he hiked 34 miles, spending 2 hours on level ground and 5 hours on uphill terrain. Find his average speed on level ground.

I'm not in it for sport, just casual recreation. Anyway I used my hubby's old 10 speed & it was one of those that you end up hunched over & your behind HURTS when you get off.

I'm looking into a simple cruiser......but what type seat is best so you don't want to die when you're done? The cruisers seem to keep your back straight when riding, I guess bc the handlebars are higher?
