Make sure you are fully hydrated. Drink as much as you can during the week of your tri. The night before, lay everything you need for the tri out, then pack your bag. Then take everything out of your bag and recheck to make sure you have everything. Eat well the night before and try to get a good night's sleep.

The morning of the race, get up early and take a hot shower. That will help loosen your muscles and help wake you up. Head to the race and make sure you have everything with you, including a bike pump. Get to transition and set everything up the way you want it. Check over your bike and make sure everything is the way you want it and pump up those tires. Go to the bathroom. Take a few minutes to stretch, check over the entrance and exit to transition. Get numbered. Go to the bathroom again. Race!

Have a great race.

The important thing you can keep in your head is to relax. This is your first triathlon and y ou should take this as a learning experience to build on. Think about finishing. Don't go out too hard in any one event. Build your effort as you go. I've heard a lot of first timers recommend that you should wait 10 seconds after the starting gun to jump in the water. It doesn't hurt your time much in the grand scheme of things and it's good to start away from other to avoid the inevitable kick in the face.

In addition to nutrition and preparing your mind, REST is one of the most important things to do before and after the race. This will allow your muscles to fully recover from your workouts, and give their peak performance during the race. So taper down your workouts in the week prior to the event, and do NOTHING for a day or two before the event.

A good rule of thumb is 1 day of rest, and 2 days of easy workouts for every hour of racing.

Typical cycle:
Sprint tri - short, easy workouts and transition practice starting 4 days before race. Complete rest for 1-2 days. Do the race, then complete rest for 1 day after, then ease back into workouts

Olympic or International distance - double the above

Half or full Ironman - 4X the Sprint.

Good Luck!

1st realize there is nothing training wise you can do to improve you time now. It's only 6 days away. Now is the time to get your head together. Practice all transition routines over and over and over. Don't change equipment unless something needs repair. Use standard practices for extra rest. Hydrate starting the day before and carb load per normal practice.

You are hydrated when your urine is clear. So get to that point the night before the race.

One aspect of racing you can control is to line up correctly. You don't want to line up in the front and be passed by hundereds of people thus bumming you the f out. Line up with your people.

You are a rookie and entitled to your rookie mistakes. Just minimize them.

Good luck and have fun!
