Tricky question. I think the most popular high quality brands in the US are: Specialized, Giant, Cannondale and Trek. The best? I couldn't say as there are many, many brands large and small that make great bikes.
I must add that the most popular brands by sales would be none I mentioned. These bikes would be the ones sold in Wal Mart, Toy R Us etc. like Huffy etc.

It is hard to say which bike is the best. There are so many different types of bikes with different characteristics. It's like asking which car is the best.
I can say that Giant makes the most bikes in the world. Not only to they make their own very popular brands, but most of the $250 to $500 bikes sold in bike stores are made by Giant in Taiwan. They manufacture bikes for Trek, GT, Specialized, Schwinn, etc. Once you go over about $500, firm usually make their own products - many in the USA.

Jay (above) is only partly correct. Most bikes retailing under $2000 or so are brought in either fully assembled or "in pieces" from Asia (to be assembled in the U.S. and declared "Made in USA"). There are a VERY few brands made in the U.S., and NO bikes are made entirely here.
There is no "best" bike brand. Most brands simply follow the lead of true trendsetters and just modify existing technology to make it their own. Some brands that MIGHT be considered best are Iron Horse, Merlin, Bob Jackson, Specialized, Trek, and a few others, but they are all best for different reasons.
As far as "most popular", this is very different from "best". Going by numbers alone, MGX- a department store brand marketed by Mongoose (just for fun we will include Pacific, Roadmaster and Mongoose brands but NOT MongoosePRO)- is by FAR the most popular. Coming in second is Huffy, then NEXT. Cheap bikes as a rule are much more "popular" than good ones.

Best for what? Different makers excell at different kinds of bikes. The bike that is the best at any particular use is probably not the most popular. One reason is that the "best" bike of any type is likely to be very expensive because of high quality frame materials and components. Popularity has to do with marketing hype, price point, and the consumer's perception of value.

unfortunatly probley supercycle becuase there so cheap. Doesnt mean its good if thats why your asking, its horrible quality. Goods Ones are: Rocky Mountain, Specialized, Trek, Giant etc etc the list goes on.
