I'm looking at used hardtail Specialized MTB's and was wondering how a newer (2005-2007) Hardrock compares with an older Rockhopper (2001-2002) and the years in between. Is the older Rockhopper frame any better than a newer Hardrock frame? If not, would an older Stumpjumper frame be any better than a newer Hardrock. What about weight differences? Are the frames comparable and should I just be focusing more on components and condition of the bike?

What about XC, Comp, and Sport designations? Are the frames the same on these, with only different components?

Any related tips/recommendations or info?

Thanks

Usually, about the XC, Comp and Sport means different components. Sometimes there might be changes in frames, but usually the frame is the same, components are different.

Usually it's better a new bike, even if it has theoretically lower components. You don't know how hard a bike was ridden, or how well kept it was.

you seem to be into a freeride/downhill sort of bike, for which i would go with the hardrock. It is a freeride/downhill/XC (cross-country) and is very versitile. I rode the rockhopper once and didn't like it very much. (my friend has one). If you are looking for a XC bike, the hardrock or the stumpjumper would do nicely. Cannondale also makes some nice (mainly XC) bikes.

Specialized in general makes mainly XC bikes, but they can vary into other styles also.

to answer your other question, those names essentially refer to the same bike, with different upgrades.

Another bike to consider is a Norco Manik, which i have and like very much. Also the Kona stinky, which is a really nice bike, although it is quite a bit heavier than most bikes of this style. The cowan and stuff are also nice, and are lighter than the stinky, since they are for dirt jumping/freeride, but have no back suspension.

i also suggest the website pinkbike.com for info and a massive buy&sell section, especially in Canada. (about 2000 bikes available for sale in canada right now.)

hope that helps you decide.

I have a 12 year old rockhopper. And it works fine.
However about any new bike is better then mine. because of the components.
I bought my GF a new low end trek. And it is better then my bike.
