You got quite a few good selections to choose from-- All the reputable vendors have good carbon fiber road bikes in that price range (Trek, Specialized, Cannondale, etc.).

I think your best approach would be to look for a bike with a setup that you like (geometry, handlebar setup, components, etc.).

Me for instance, when I went shopping for a carbon bike, I knew I wanted straight MTB-style handlebars with rapid-fire shifters, and at least Ultegra components. Ended up buying this carbon-fiber bike and I love it (photo of my baby strapped to the back of my car): http://priuschat.com/uploads/post-29948-1190659647.jpg

So figure out what features and components you want, and hunt accordingly. Once you decide on which specific bike you want, go to a bike shop that carries it and have it fitted to you. Good luck!

Assuming the bike fits you well (Fit is the single most important element when choosing a new, high-end bike), I would consider the following:

Trek:

Lifetime warranty on their carbon frames. I know many elite and pro-level racers who LOVE their trek bikes. Light, responsive, stiff...and did I mention LIFETIME WARRANTY?

The Madone 5.1 is a great bike:

The Madone 4.5 is a solid bike as well although it does not have the OCLV frame construction which is really the best of what Trek does.

Ibis:

At the top of your price range but a little more non-traditional (if you're into that kind of thing).

Also, to keep costs down (and not lose ANY performance...actually, you might gain some) I would look at SRAM components - the Force line of SRAM components is priced better than similar Shimano stuff and it works GREAT.

Good luck.

I've sold several brands of carbon bikes, and right now I think Cannondale has the best values in carbon. From the carbon/aluminum Six13 models to the fill carbon SuperSix, Cannondale has variety, performance, and looks. Somewhere under $2000 gets you a very capable carbon bike. $6000 gets the top of the line.

You can pick up a lot of nice carbon bikes in the range. I see many already mentioned. Check out bikesdirect.com They carry the Motobecane carbons. One of my favorites is a Scott CR1 or Felt F1, F2. Super light and always gets rave reviews.

As mentioned, the Trek Madone is a good bike, I'm partial to the Specialized Tarmac as well.
As another poster stated looking off season -- even as early as mid July -- can yield some significant deals on previous year models.

I believe you can find the best priced road carbon bike in Wheel World (www.wheelworld.com) , Jenson USA ( www.jensonusa.com) and Adrenalize Bikes (www.adrenalizebikes.) Check all the specs before getting the whole rig----and your budget looks cool----

At that price range, it's hard to fault any bike from any manufacturer- name brand or not. Go with the one that fits you best. Proper fitting outweighs anything else at any price range. You have so many options to choose from that you just need to find the one that is spec'd out the way you want it and fits you as well. Good luck

I picked up a trek madone 5.2 sl (2007) for 1999. If you don't mind riding last years model then look for something on sale, trek was making its dealers sell at that price according to the bike store i bought it from. i think the 5.9 sl was on sale too but for a little more (2700ish)

-today it really doesnt matter anymore, because all bikes are made in Taiwan anyway

-i would therefore choose a made in Canada or USA, or European carbon

-the price may be slightly higher, but your supporting our markets and not child labour
