x = uphill hike speed
x+3 = level hike speed
5x = 5 hours on uphill terrain
2(x+3) = 2 hours on level ground
34 = total miles hiked

2(x+3) + 5x = 34
2x + 6 + 5x = 34
7x + 6 = 34
7x = 28
x = 4

4 mph = uphill hike speed
7 mph = level hike speed

7 m.p.h.
take 6 from 34, divide 28 by 7 = 4 plus the extra 3 m.p.h.

Nobody can hike at 7 MPH. Tell your teacher I said so. And do you own homework.
