Wax based chain lubes like White Lightening work great and help keep the chain clean. About $8 a bottle and that will be enough for years.

White Lightning is ok.....it's really nice because unless you really goop it on, it's truly a dry lube and won't attract sand/dust. And it sets up quick for riding.....a half hour is ok but a few hours is better. The downside is that it doesn't last very long, and if you get into water/mud it's gone in just a couple miles. It's really sandy around here and I used it for a long time happily.
My fave right now is ProLink Pro Gold. It blows away White Lightning and several other lubes I've tried (don't even waste your time with Finishline Krytech and their other wax lube, or especially not Pedro's Icewax). Ounce for ounce over the life of the bottle/riding conditions, it's a lot cheaper than White Lightning, too. The downside to Pro Gold is that you really need 8-12 hours to let it dry completely and be at its best. If you have the time for that, it'll last a very long time, have minimal to zero pickup of dust, and hold up very well in the wet.
Rock-n-Roll lubes are supposed to be great too, but I haven't tried them out.

It's not that bike lubes leave grease. It's that they attract dirt which gums up the drvetrain and becomes black nastiness. WD-40 is not the solution. It is actually a rust remover and solvent, not a lubricant. Look for a wax based lube or a dry teflon lube. These protect the chain while not leaving behind a sticky residue which will attract dirt.

Dumonde Tech Bicycle Chain Lube,
White Lightening, Pro Gold, Tri flow, Boeshield T9, Pedro's, Finish Line all have their following, and are all pretty good, much better than crap like WD40, 3-in-one, etc.
you will probably decide by matching quality, your life/riding style to the lubrication method, local preference, availability, and price.
Mountain biking is pretty rough on chains, take a look at the reviews below and see which you can get locally.

Chain lubes should not leave grease if you wipe off the chain after your done lubing it. Make sure you do this and it will reduce the friction. I always use dry chain lube, right now I use tri-flow. Hope this helped!

I use White Lightning. There are two different types. The stuff in the white bottle doesn't last very long, so you really need to apply it before every ride. The stuff in the blue bottle (White Lightning Epic) lasts much longer. I put it onto my chain about every 100 miles.
Don't use WD-40 on your chain. It's mostly kerosene.
