if we're not supposed to take the bible literally then how can it not be fiction? there is nothing to interpret about nonfiction, but if we have to interpret it metaphorically then how the hell can it not be fiction? I mean you dont interpret real things.

so can somebody explain to me how the stories be interpreted metaphorically without them being fictional?

If there was another part of the body - other than foreskin- that I believed the invisible man who lives in the sky wants me to cut off of my baby’s body. Is there any way that I would not be seen as insane? Buy the mental health experts, the US government, and society as a whole?

I just saw this question... http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20071127121612AAHgyPK&r=w&pa=FZptHWf.BGRX3OFMiDJUWeR2YyWEr.3Uz6GbmLx7O3D9vxYbRA--&paid=answered#NbUvWDC5VTXDyrn5eYqb
and it got me thinking, what would you (any of you) do or think or say if, when you died, you found out you'd been wrong in what you believed?....

I saw this question was acutally asked about a year ago...
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AtTz.YcDjICbQKMY48ZFRTlIzKIX;_ylv=3?qid=20060727215140AAUfadt

I didn't see any familiar faces/names in her answers, so here's your chance to put in your 2 cents' worth....

One last request- no bashing, or saying your belief IS right so there is no question.
Just suppose for a moment...
What if?...

Lately, I have had a dream with a Ministry leader & then another dream with a different leader.

To date I had a dream with Kim Clement (Prophetic ministry) at Safeway, a dream with Benny Hinn (spending the night) visiting my husband & I at our home (that was bigger in my dream than it actually is). A dream of Billy Graham visiting my husband & I at our home (He talked with my husband). A dream of Franklin Graham at an outdoor Crusade where I talked to him afterward (the same night I dreamed of Billy Graham visiting us.). Staying in a motel room where my husband & I had the room & a distant member of my husband's childhood Church was sharing the living area with others & my husband had a long talk about alcoholism with her. And had a dream with Joyce Meyer last, & before that a dream with my Pastor Jack & Joyce in it (We were on a distant trip & met them on the same trip.)

What would this type of dreams indicate, if anything?
And are you having similar dreams?

I'm sorry but if you've had any exposure to 'Living Buddha, Living Christ' then you would understand where Thich Nhat Hahn was coming from. How many of you have read this book as a Christian or non-Christian and have really admired the man who wrote this book? I know that the person I'm referencing knows that I'm talking about them but I don't call people out so please explain why you devalue this monk's words when he is trying to unite people? All thoughts welcome. Many blessings
Buddhist/fomer Catholic who had many wounds healed by this monk's offering of Catholicism in particular.

I do not need links or Catechism as a took this as I took this as a major in college so please give me your opinion without referencing material. Catholic and Christian and Buddhist alike.

PLEASE READ

Aren’t the laws of Moses inside the commands of Christ?

OR

Christ was adding more to the laws of Moses.

OR

The laws of Moses = the commands of Christ.

OR

The laws of Moses are no longer valid, only the commands of Christ?

Why must a Nativity Scene be placed in a park or on public property. Is not putting the Nativity Scene on public property an act of religion. Why can't the Muslims put up the sword and star during Ramadan? Why can't the Jews put up a minorah during Hannukah? Why can't the atheists put up a sign that there is no religion? Why can't the Morons put up a memorial to the founders of their church?

Which religion do you want the state religion to be. If only Christianity is the right one, what is wrong with all the other faiths? Are Christians so single minded that they can't allow for the beliefs of other people? Why not put the Nativity Scene in front of a church? Why disenfranchise entire religions?

Please do not quote chapter and verse to this question. I believe in my religion. You can believe in your religion. The only thing I am asking is why can't we both let the other live with their choice? Is it necessary to convert the world?

Some versions render the verse in Romans 8:15
For you have not received a spirit of slavery bringing you into fear again, but you have received a spirit of sonship in which we cry Abba Father" ( Recovery Version Bible)

Others render " sonship" as " adoption"

These words may seem like one and the same but they are not. Sonship carries with it the essence of being the same in Life. Carrying the same genes.
An adopted child does not have the life of a Father nor the genes of that Father.

Our spirit, which was created to match God, Who is spirit is the part of us that has been regenerated with the very Divine Life of God. Is this adoption?
Do adopted children become heirs?
I am not asking this based on the human concept. We see in the word that we are Born of the Spirit. Is this adoption? We see also that we are made partakers of the Divine Nature. This sonship has with it the life, position, living, enjoyment, birthright ,inheritance and manifestation of a son.

Ok you have been presented with 2 theories.
Let's look at them:
GOD - Ok here you have been told that God impregnantes a teenager who is another man's wife. Her husband, Joseph, apparently is OK with that since he raises the lad. God has some rules for you, they obviously do not apply to him. YOU are not allowed to covet your neighbor's wife.

God gets pissed off at the world and decides to save a few of his children and some pairs of animals and start over by flooding the earth and killing off everybody. Kind of like turning an Etch A Sketch over and shaking it. But another of God's rules for YOU, not him, is you can not kill.

Ok now let's view the Santa Theory
This golly old soul works year round to provide happiness for all the children in the world. This inspires them to be good all year long.

Santa quit smoking when he found out second hand smoke is harmful.

He's been married forever to the same woman, never cheated on her even though he has a list of naughty girls.

I'm genuinely interested in answers to this. Why are believers in a god prepared to believe in a god? Is there a reason you are prepared to believe in something that can never be proven in this life? Was there a specific incident that caused you to believe or were you just raised to believe? Have you ever questioned your belief or is it something you just accept?

You tell me that god is loving and helps if you accept him into your heart and pray. Correct????

HAVE YOU EVER SEEN THOSE LITTLE CHILDREN IN AFRICA WHO ARE DYING EVERYDAY BY THE THOUSANDS BECAUSE OF HUNGER, DISEASE, NO MEDICATION, NO HEALTHCARE, AND NO CLEAN WATER. OH BY THE WAY THOSE CHILDREN ARE CHRISTIANS WHO PRAY ALL THE TIME.

maybe you should turn off MTV for a while and see what happens to people in the world, whom god neglected, before you praise him everyday for the wonderful food you worked hard to earn.

Christian bookshops are refusing to stock copies of a new Bible study guide that challenges standard New Testament translations that describe gay sex as sinful.

A US distributor, God’s Word to Women, has banned the Australian publication, and withdrawn another Bible translation published by the same NSW publishing house, Smith and Stirling, for promoting a lifestyle in contradiction of the scriptures
1 Corinthians 6:9 and Timothy 1:10 Paul sets out examples of Jewish law including admonitions against fornication, idolatry and drunkenness, as well as the much disputed word “arsenokoites” which has been taken to mean homosexuality.

But in her study guide, Dr Nyland says the word has been wrongly assumed to mean homosexual.
The reference in Romans, and the story of Sodom and Gomorrah, were about angels having sex with humans, and not about homosexual acts
Satan in the Church again??

This "person" answered a question on sex like this:

"Check out 1Corinthians. Paul had a problem with sex. He was probably a closet homosexual."

How "illogical". Will this person ALSO say that homosexuality was a "problem" ? Or will they...lie?

I find this, in my face, suffering propaganda depressing and frankly morbid.
The first time I saw a christ on the cross I was 4 and I was really scared. Catholics are really good with all the gory details. And "The Passion" jesus freaking christ that was awful, now wonder there is so much mental illness associated with religion.
