i know its got something to do with an alien named xeno or something like that but beyond that I'm lost. Does anyone Know why tom cruise, John Travolta and others would convert to Scientology?

Ok, let me rephrase the question. What is it? what is it about? is it just another flying spaghetti monster religion? a study of some sort? i don't care if your making a joke or anything but i would appreciate a real answer.

Im an ex-scientologist.
Its a self-help religion. They believe in God but dont believe that its a good way to go thru life praying, believing in miracles, or "turning your life over to God". They would prefer to empower you to make your own life better.
Courses on personal communication, better studying, fighting peer-pressure, shaking drugs, self-confidence, getting over blocks, and generally how to feel good about your life without relying on someone else for it. That stuff is all perfect for the Hollywood crowd.
And as far as I can see, the long list of ones doing it strike me as being happy open people that dont give a crap what you think. About the only thing anyone seems to hold against them is that they are happy, open and being scientologists. Compare that to the rest of the hollywood crowd that is always in the news. Id much rather have the kinds of articles that Cruise, Travolta, Seinfield, Alley have than the ones about Gibson, Spears, Jackson.
Im not sure how many of them "converted". Scientology is non-denominational. Most people just take the courses and keep their own religion. Scientology allows that.
As far as the Xenu stuff, in the couple years I hung around a scientology center I never heard any of that. People that say they never met one or visited a center keep posting it as "secret stuff that only the top members know" so 99% of scientologists dont get it either even if it was true (which I doubt the exact wordings) :)
I took the communications, and the study courses (the cheaper courses). Great stuff. I still use it every day. I didnt feel a need for the rest of it so I left at that point. Apparently most people do.

A science fiction writer, L Ron Hubbard came up with a book (supposedly not science fiction) that spawned the religion. They believe an alien sent a bunch of other alien slaves to earth in a big ship. The ship crashed and killed all the aliens, and now their spirits fly around and get in you and cause bad things to happen. If you pay the church of Scientology enough money, they will get the spirits out of you by putting electrodes in your hands and running a safe current through you and measure arbitrary things.

Scientology started by pretending to be a science. The sci-fi writer who invented it proposed that he had discovered the inner secrets of how the mind works and that if you followed his regimen you could gain a kind of perfection - total recall, complete mental control over even involuntary bodily processes, and a massive reasoning ability unclouded by emotion, prejudice, and so on.
But it was really a fraud. When scientists started pressing for proof that couldn't be provided they became a religion instead. Now they use flotillas of lawyers, brainwashing techniques, and other cult practices to amass and protect their power base. Loathsome and evil.

Tom Cruise and John Travolta are fags. They believe that there are creatures out there that are smarter than us, and will take over this world someday and kill everyone. They think that having this religion will ensure that the alien creatures wouldn't kill them. Thats what I heard.

I am in California. They are all around me.
So far as I can tell they are all happy. But they are too focused for me. I prefer to hang around people that arent so busy getting on with their lives.
I have no problem seeing why Hollywoodies are into it. but personally I prefer the Church of the SubGenius. The church for slackers, laggers, and procrastinators. :)
