I went to the library today and found out that my Public Library owns two books on Wicca.

Now i have heard of both the authors but i would like your opinion of whether or not they are a reliable source of info on Wicca.

Author one "Raven Grimassi"

Author two "Lady Sabrina"

Thanks!

I would not recommend either of those authors, or, frankly, anything from Llewellyn except maybe Buckland and Cunningham.

*shrug* they are both about the same.. but for the record.. Llewellyn isn't perfect.. some of their books have faulty info .. Out of the two I prefer Raven Grimassi.

I believe that everyone learning about Wicca or Witchcraft.. well, even Paganism in general should read many authors, and many subjects.. and get a feel for what each authors strenghts and weaknesses are.

For example.. Edain McCoy has a great writing style, and every once in awhile I read something new. but most of her books are exactly the same.. if you read one on Celtic Magic and then one on Northern Magic they are word for word.. (with a few words changed, but the rest of the book identical)

Silver Ravenwolf.. another one.. she writes in a way that gets your interest.. but, she dumbs things down, uses historical resources that have been proven to be incorrect, and really puts things out more to sell then to inform..

Ray Buckland .. hmm.. has more technical info than many others, has a broad knowledge base, but he writes as though he is better than you and you should know it. He also uses some faulty info.. such as the aspect of cave art being a sign of sympathetic magic use in the days of the cave men. it has been disproven by archeologists due to the fact that the paintings do not portray animals that were hunted in that area. ..

Just keep reading and you'll get an eye for it.. :)

I haven't read any of the books by Lady Sabrina so I cannot comment on her. I have read "Beltaine" by Raven Grimassi and from what I can tell from that book she does seem to be a pretty good author, I wouldn't mind checking out a few more of her books before I really recommend reading her though. I still think one of the best authors about Wicca you will find is Scott Cunningham.

Good luck on your quest for knowledge.

I've never heard of Lady Sabrina, but I have read Grimassi. His stuff is okay.. I just don't like his writing style, nor his views on things.. just my opinion.

Are you being sarcastic about Llewellyn? I'm not sure. Some things from Llewellyn are good, and others are way off. Edain McCoy is a perfect example.. her Witta book was completely debunked. Silver Ravenwolf is a mess.. like all things, one needs to be discerning when reading any one. The best experience is the empirical.

I don't own any books by either of those authors, but regardless, never put all your faith in just one author when it comes to the subject of Wicca. Sorry that your library has such a limited selection!

A friend of mine who has a pagan website just recently wrote a good article about finding books on Paganism/Wicca and sorting out the "good from the garbage" so to speak. Feel free to email me if you are interested in the article and I will direct you to it.

You could also check out the Wiccan/Pagan Times (link below) for reviews on these books/authors.

Have considered using inter library loans? I worked in a library for a few years, and you can order any book that you book doesn't have from any other library in the country, for the small fee of 1.00 per book. They usually let you have them for 3 weeks or so. Also, check out used books on amazon.com, that's where I buy almost all of my Wicca books. You don't even need a credit card, you can use your checkbook.

The library isn't a very good place to get those. I've never read either of those authors. If you're looking for books, you'll have to buy them from the book store.

Lewellyn Publications is good for beginners. They tend to print simple "how to" books. Once you get more involved you'll definitely want to try books from other publishing companies. Lewellyn is looking at what books are most likely to sell naturally since that is their primary focus is selling books. Not everything you need to learn can be learned from books but they are a good starting point. Read everything you can get your hands on and decide for yourself with some additional research. I highly recommend buying from half.com and ebay since you can pick up books much cheaper from there. Why not save money if you can!~
