Definition:

"Critical thinking consists of mental processes of discernment, analysis and evaluation. It includes all possible processes of reflecting upon a tangible or intangible item in order to form a solid judgment that reconciles scientific evidence with common sense"

If everything is cut and dry for some, do you think that will hinder someone's critical thinking skills?

I asked my friend when I was upset, "Where is God now?"
And he responded, "Well, where did you last put him?"

This line seems to mean very different things to different people. What does it mean to you?

Observation is a powerful thing. I observed a service with a different mindset today and I don't think I dig religion much any more. I am more convinced than ever it is just business as usual and the week are there for their happy meal of guilt, fear, community, salvation, and patriotism. Call me as wrong as you want. I am not sure that I care. The only question I have left is how long will Christ allow the band of idiots and theives mind the store.

This is a completely true story:
When I was in college, I had a sociology assignment to visit a church of a different denomination. So I chose a local Pentacostal church. I will admit that I was a Goth girl, all black clothes, pale face, crazy faux-hawk hair do at the time. However, besides a little reading on the subject, I was not into witchcraft and I knew nothing about Satanism or any other controversial religion. Actually, I was Catholic at the time.

So I went to the service and 2 friend went with me. It was very interesting. We decided to leave and on the way out into the parking lot, this man approaches us and says he's a PI hired by the church to investigate threats to the chuch. He knew the names of some of my friends and said they had been watching them for witchcraft. It was really bizarre. Is this normal for Pentacostal churches or was this particular church really over doing it?

here are a few there are many more including capitol punishment (Exodus 22:18-25) 18 “You must not preserve a sorceress alive. 19 “Anyone lying down with a beast is positively to be put to death. 20 “One who sacrifices to any gods but Jehovah alone is to be devoted to destruction. 21 “And you must not maltreat an alien resident or oppress him, for YOU people became alien residents in the land of Egypt. 22 “YOU people must not afflict any widow or fatherless boy. 23 If you should afflict him at all, then if he cries out to me at all, I shall
unfailingly hear his outcry; 24 and my anger will indeed blaze, and I shall certainly kill YOU with
the sword, and YOUR wives must become widows and YOUR sons fatherless boys. 25 “If you
should lend money to my people, to the afflicted alongside you, you must not become like a usurer
to him. YOU must not lay interest upon him. . .
(Exodus 22:28) 28 “You must not call down evil upon God nor curse a chieftain among yourpeople.

I am writing a fantasy story whose premise is, 'What would people be like if their god were evil?"

The evil I'm trying to mold for the deity is more subtle than megalomaniacal, human-sacrificing evil. This deity wants to move slowly, to see which people on its planet are the strongest.

These people are capable of love and do love, but they can also be nasty or arrogant when threatened.

What sort of people do you imagine would result from such a deity if it started directly affecting their lives?

Was there an event that led up to it?

Just to be fair here is my story:
I was in college when going to a Catholic Church began to feel "wrong" to me. I read a little about Wicca but never really began practicing it. I was young and in college and I wasn't that interested in spirituality at the time.

Fast forward about 7 years to when I met my husband who was a former Presbytarian and a practicing pagan. I got reinterested in pagan beliefs. We had discussed raising our children in the UU church so they could decide their own religion when they got old enough. We had a daughter and before she turned 1 yrs. old, my husband died suddenly. Shortly after his death, I began going to the UU church and seeking my true path which seems to be nature based but doesnt quite fit into anything defined. I hang with the pagans at church. I think my husband's death is what set me on my spiritual quest.
So what's your story?

Ok, so I know nothing about religion. Well, at least very little. I was researching to get a bible and I remembered that there is a new and an old testament. I am familiar with the new one, but what is the old testament? And what religions is it important/not important in? Thanks for your help.

The Spirit’s presence within us enables us to understand and interpret the Word of God (Scripture). Jesus told His disciples “when He, the Spirit of Truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth” (John 16:13).

In Biblical times, people were identified by whom they descended, from where they came from, and which ethnicity they were (which is why names were listed like the following: Jesus of Nazareth, Lydia of Thyatira, etc.). This is because, in these times, others judged people according to these different aspects. Now let’s look at the first of three ‘strikes’ against Jesus: He was a Jew.

For the gospel to be spread to the Gentile world, the fact of Jesus being a Jew would have been a great hurdle to overcome. The Romans already considered the Jews as trying to undermine the Roman Empire by refusing to worship their ‘gods.’ Refusing to follow the Roman social order would mean that one wished Rome ‘out of business.’
The Roman historian Tacitus said, “Among the Jews all things are profane that we hold sacred…the other practices of the Jews are sinister and revolting…proselytes to Jewry adopt the same practices, and the very first lesson they learn is to despise the gods, shed all feelings of patriotism, and consider parents, children, and brothers as readily expendable..the Jewish belief is paradoxical and degraded.”

Now imagine Jesus, a Jew, trying to convince the Romans (or other Gentiles) that He was the only way and that they should stop following their false gods. Punishment for rebels against Rome was crucifixion. Considering that it would be treason to go against the current Roman social order, why would a Roman convert to Christianity and risk being punished and shunned for rebelling against Rome. Add to that the poor reputation Jews had among the Romans, and only something like the resurrection could explain Christianity’s spread into Rome. Unless there had been absolute evidence for the resurrection, Christianity would have never had a chance in the Roman world.

I'm not saying let them into Heaven, but he could easily create a middle ground where they could live forever without being burned by eternal flames.

This prayer really shouldn't interfere with his divine plan more than any other prayers. In fact, God may like it when he sees how caring you are.

After all, most non-Christians are just imperfect human beings who were not convinced about the reality of Jesus.

So would you pray that God will let all those people out of Hell? You know, give them some ho-hum place that isn't Heaven and isn't Hell?

Because from what I understand, Moses and his people killed a lot of people on the way to the "Promised Land" just because they woulndn't let them pass through their land. Why was God ok with this and never punished them for killing so many innocent people.
