I am writing a fantasy story whose premise is, 'What would people be like if their god were evil?"

The evil I'm trying to mold for the deity is more subtle than megalomaniacal, human-sacrificing evil. This deity wants to move slowly, to see which people on its planet are the strongest.

These people are capable of love and do love, but they can also be nasty or arrogant when threatened.

What sort of people do you imagine would result from such a deity if it started directly affecting their lives?

An interesting story line. A subtle evil deity trying to pit groups against each other to determine the strongest would need a hook. He would have to get each group to believe that they were actually different from one another, rather than an entire humanity created by the same deity. He would then need a way to pit the groups against each other---perhaps convincing each group that they needed his favor and give each group a separate identity by which to try to obtain it. He would then need to create a "stick" and "carrot" methodology with each group to control them, telling each group that they could recieve great rewards by his favor, but horrible consequences if they failed to do as he said. That kind of an evil deity would be able to bring out great brutality and evil from the mortals, all while they think that they are serving him for a greater cause---now that's subtle!

Read the Dark Elf trilogy by R. A. Salvatore, he does a good job of elaborating on an evil society run by the Drow Goddess Lolth. It also fits the description of the evil your looking for. Of course Lolth does demand sacrifice, but her ability to constantly pit one dark elf against each other throughout their life so that only the most trecherous survival is where her true evil comes in.

Sounds exactly like the USA and George Bush, so I guess they would be an self-righteous people, too loyal and loving to see that they have been duped by their evil leaders to know that destroying many in the name of peace is the work of the antichrist.

These people do exist and it is because of their interpretations of their religion's god.

Look at Hitler. Hell, look at Bush.

The idea of the God you are trying to mold seems an awful lot like a government. Dictatorship mixed with theocracy, if you will.

Just carbon copy the OT God and you have yourself what you're looking for. You might as well change the title to, "How God Were Evil"

God is not the same as the Evil who is guiding people to the wrong path.

There is reference in the Bible about God creating good and evil, if I'm not mistaken.

if God were evil, He'd be satan. there is no evil in essence, just perversion of what God has made. from perfection to perversion is the way of Satan. so in answer to your question, just look around at those who follow anyone but the Christ.
