One of the leading arguments for the invalidity of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints seems to be that at one point (even in our very near past) members of the church have espoused racist ideology and even practiced racist behavior.

The loudest voices of such criticisms seem to come from Caucasian, American Protestants and many are working hard to inform Black Latter-day Saints of "the mistake they've made by joining such a racist church". My question is: Why is it ok to use such an argument against Mormons (LDS) but it is perfectly fine to turn our heads with respect to historical cases of Protestant racism?

Here are such cases:

Between 1860 and 1941, the First Methodist Episcopal Church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania actively segregated its Black congregants from their White counterparts. Such segregation is what lead to the formation of "Mother Bethel African Methodist Church". (Guttermann 119).

I've done something really bad, and I don't want to go to Hell. Can you tell me which God is the real God of the thousands of different religions out there? I need to pray to him so I can get into heaven, thanks! You're considered a sinner if you believe in anything but the right God; everyone claims their God is the real one, so I don't want to get it wrong!

I'm getting no help from Yahoo! on this. Big surprise. But I don't want to make the same mistake again in the future.

My question is, why was this question removed? All I asked was "You ever go back to read over some of your early questions/answers on R&S?"

I must be doing something wrong, but I don't have a clue. Anybody have any educated guesses?

Hello, all:

I am taking part in NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month), and one of the characters is a Southern Baptist, in a universe where different religions manifest different Divine powers. Although NaNoWriMo is about turning out 50,000 words in 30 days, and therefore doesn't place a great emphasis on quality or overall accuracy, I want to do justice to this character and his beliefs.

Therefore, I have some questions that perhaps you can help with.

What are the core beliefs of Southern Baptists? (I know a little bit about the "gifts of the Spirit", but I could use some more clarification on what that means and how they are used, if they are.) What is the experience of baptism like? What is the ordination process for Southern Baptist clergy? How do you differ from other types of Baptists? What version of the Bible do you use?

I've heard many evolutionists claim that Intelligent Design is a theory of ignorance, that its basic premise is that if we can't explain it then "God dun it!" and I can certainly see their point.

However, how is that any different than evolutionist, who, although they have never observed a natural process which can explain the addition of information to an organism's genome, excuse this lack of evidence by saying "Time is a miracle worker! Give it enough time and anything can happen?"

I understand that time is something that can be understood and it tangible in some respects, but so is intelligence. There are multiple areas of science that incorporate methods of detecting intelligence.

So what's the difference?

I was just wondering . . . what is the process by which Mormons are brainwashed? I understand how someone might believe a child would be "brainwashed" because of their parents, but what about adult converts? Do Missionaries put a special brain-washing hat on people or hypnotize them? Honestly!?! where do these ideas come from? What is your personal opinion?

They can't manage Fema funds .......can't prepare for disaster and actually cope with it with all our "technology".......I mean I look at the world today and I ask myself........how can anyone trust in Man over God? Of course from my perspective God has shown me for 20 years I can trust him. He has never failed me.....he has never failed to keep his word to me. Are you sure you dont want to just try Jesus today and ask him to save you and help you forevermore? He really really loves you. He does. More than you can comprehend.
