Where I grew up, there were plenty of 'Catholics,' but none of them took their religion very seriously. When I dated a Catholic girl, I never had to wonder if she would put out for me, since she always would.
The same was NOT true of other religions - there were some truly hardcore Mormons and Jehovah's Witnesses, for example. But no hardcore Catholics.
Is 'devout Catholic' mostly an oxymoron? Or are there actually devout Catholics out there somewhere? My impression is that Catholicism is more of a social thing than a real religion. If you are 'Catholic,' you probably go to church like twice a year, and that's it.
I like that system. I've never met any 'Catholic fanatics,' but I have met several Catholics who say they might be atheists.
