Where I grew up, there were plenty of 'Catholics,' but none of them took their religion very seriously. When I dated a Catholic girl, I never had to wonder if she would put out for me, since she always would.

The same was NOT true of other religions - there were some truly hardcore Mormons and Jehovah's Witnesses, for example. But no hardcore Catholics.

Is 'devout Catholic' mostly an oxymoron? Or are there actually devout Catholics out there somewhere? My impression is that Catholicism is more of a social thing than a real religion. If you are 'Catholic,' you probably go to church like twice a year, and that's it.

I like that system. I've never met any 'Catholic fanatics,' but I have met several Catholics who say they might be atheists.

Honestly, I think this is a bit over simplified. I would imagine their are Catholics that are very devout. I don't think I know any personally though.

I am a Christian, one of Jehovah's Witnesses.

I'm a Catholic, but I don't know about "devout" and such things. I think that what devout should mean and what people use it to mean are probably two different things. I go to Mass, take communion, and follow the rules I've been taught (I've only been Catholic for a year). But I have met a person who is mean but considers themself to be very Christian. Everyone lelse just doesn't say anything out loud but basically ignores him.

I think just like any religion it depends on your society. I grew up in Catholic schools and only knew devout Catholics until I was in college. As an adult, I have met many (what we call in my area) "jack mormons". These are the mormons who don't follow anything they are taught and rarely attend service. To say there are no devout Catholics would be such a huge generalization, seeing as how many Catholics there are in this world. It is true that Catholicism isn't as strict as many religions as far as pushing people on how to live their lives. I have Mormon friends who's bishop is constantly after them on how they live their lives. Where as a priest has never asked me personal questions or preached to me. Another comparison would be, in the mormon church they have wards which is when they are told to attend service. Catholics attend mass on a schedule that works for them. Catholics need a lot of self discipline, which can be hard in this generation. But there are plenty of them still out there!

There are devout Catholics out there. I was born in to a Catholic family but am now Christian. My firends are Catholic and some are devout. Peoples belifes change and I found my calling being a Baptist. I didn't like being forced to make my confirmation in order to graduate. I do not see hoe a baby can be baptized when they do not know of Jesus and what he is all about.

Stay true to who you are and what you are. There are people out there for everyone. Don't look and that person will come around. it might take some time but you will find that person.

Hello, I'd like to introduce myself. My name is Theresa, and I am a devout practicing Catholic.
I think that one problem with Catholics is the lack of truly knowing what the faith is!
Being Catholic is awesome, when one truly understands that in Catholicism is The Real Presence, the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
Once one understands the importance of this most precious Sacrament, one will be able to learn the richness of all that is Catholic.
It isn't an oxymoron, it is a call to holiness to come to understand what it means to be truly Catholic.

Selective perception may be to blame. Since you sound as if you approve of lax Catholics, chances are this approval is the reason you notice such types when you see them, perhaps unconsciously ignoring/overlooking the truly devout Catholics when you run into them?

Look for the devout Catholics, not the lax ones, and you will find them. They're around, if you really want to find them.

I grew up Catholic and I too have always wondered this. I now understand alot of Catholics are cultural catholics. This is the way they were raised, they dont step foot in a church for 20 years, yet they are still "Catholic" My mother is the only "real" Catholic that I know; and I know alot of them. In fact, as a born again Christian, I disagree with alot of Catholic dogma, yet I appreciate a Catholic who is a "real one" much more than one who wears the badge, but doesnt put in the time so to speak. I think the tragedy is the RCC doesnt seem to take care of their people. With all of that said, I do believe some Catholics are saved, as well my parents priest seems to have a firm grasp on salvation by grace which seems sometimes to be a contradiction to their faith.

I am, and know a lot of devout Catholics. It is very sad that a lot of people share your opinion. It is easy to talk the talk and a lot harder to walk the walk.

Perhaps, before you condemn the whole Catholic faith you should do some research and discover the joy of the real Catholic faith.

To generalize is equal to being stupid.
You have had very little contact with Catholics, we are no different than any other religion. Some are devout and others are loose and fancy free. As for who puts out well I can only speak for myself I married the guy I first had sex with.

I have a brother that is a very devout Catholic. I think that devout Catholics aren't as outrageous as other religions so we don't notice them very much...things like waiting in parking lots for you...then springing out to bug you about Jesus.
