Would saving all the people of the USA not fall into the same category as saving your child?

sure. The idea that you can kill someone but, just don't make them look stupid or embarrass them or physically hurt them (outside of killing them ) is absolutely absurd. At that point--that person is at war with me and there definitely is such a thing as a righteous war. It is their choice to cooperate or not.

I don't believe that two wrongs make a right.

I do believe that torture is too readily accepted. I have watched with concern as it has crept into various TV programmes such as 24 and Lost as a 'necessary evil'.

I cannot express how strongly I disagree with this. Torture in my view dehumanises the torturer and those who condone the act.

If through our actions we sacrifice our humanity, quite what have we gained? To me the price is too high and the answer is no, to both parts of your question.

As for your first question: A terrorist is not part of a country's military so I really don't think it is covered by any treaty or rules of war. Torture is a given.

As for your second question: See above.

I am an atheist.
I am politically liberal.
I am in favor of the death penalty. I do not believe it is used often enough.

I agree with you, but we have to make sure it's absolutely necessary, life or death, and justified. We have to be careful. You can't go around torturing any suspect. You have to use intelligence. You also have to make sure they aren't just making stuff up to get you to stop. You have to know if they are resistant and lying. I think there is a way to get reliable info from torture. Sometimes, it's better than nothing. But you have a moral obligation to make sure there is no other option. Jack Bauer had better be running around screaming "We're running out of time!"

One of the many problems with torture is that all it teaches you is which people are weak and which ones can stand it.

If someone can withstand torture then you are really only hurting yourself as you abuse them and accomplish nothing.

If someone cannot withstand torture they will confess to anything and everything. They will lie to stop the pain and will be an unreliable source.

In answer to your question, I would not torture someone who might or might not be involved with terrorists just to find out if they are.
Besides, I could be the next innocent person tortured to find out what I "might" be involved in.

And what happens if the person who is being tortured genuinely doesn't know anything? Interesting how quickly it takes to lower ourselves morally in order to get a little security, or at least the illusion of security.

Only if you can tell me how torture would save the child.

no, i wouldn't encourage torture because i would have no way of knowing that it would save my child and it would be inhumane and cause more harm than good in the long run. at some point you have to ask yourself why you are a target of terrorism in the first place.
