Were there any events in your lives which opened your eyes and made you question your religion, or eventually lead you to atheism? If so, what were they?

And don't try the "You can't have faith in God without being a good person"/"You can't be a good person without faith in God" thing. Just honestly answer which one you believe to be more important to YOU and why.

Play nice!

Go onto their site for a little bit and read around and see if it offends you.

www.godhatesfags.com

or look at what some of their protest signs say:

"Don't worship the dead"
"God hates america"
"God hates you"
"Fag troops"
"You're going to hell"
"Thank god for dead soldiers"

this is why i choose to live a life without religion.

Ok...first why I'm asking...I've been having some issues with religion. Last night I had decided to pray to God about the Book of Mormon. I gave myself into full submission to Hin and asked Him to show me a verse that will let me know that LDS is the truth. I opened the book and pointed to Mosiah 2:34 which says
" I say unto you, that there are not any among you, except it be your little children that have not been taught concerning these things, but what knoweth that ye are eternally indebted to your heavenly Father, to render to him all that you have and are; and also have been taught concerning the records which contain the prophecies which have been spoken by the holy prophets, even down to the time our father, Lehi, left Jerusalem;"

And I knew right then and there that it had to be true because what are the chances of all that happening? So to any Mormons, was your experience anything like this?

Two trains leave different cities heading toward each other at different speeds. When and where do they meet?
Train A, traveling 70 miles per hour (mph), leaves Westford heading toward Eastford, 260 miles away. At the same time Train B, traveling 60 mph, leaves Eastford heading toward Westford. When do the two trains meet? How far from each city do they meet?

To solve this problem, we'll use the distance formula:

Distance = Rate x Time

Since an equation remains true as long as we perform the same operation on both sides, we can divide both sides by rate:

Distance
---------- = Time
Rate

or by time:

Distance
---------- = Rate
Time

Year's ago, I lived in the middle of drug distributers. I was able to stop killings and stood up for child rape victoms. I stood alone as none would help. My only protection was not from men, yet I had more protection than men can understand. So much so that none can relate or comprehend. I had no comprehension of what the Native Americans call the great spirits. I did have more courage than I ever dreamed I could have, This is the only reason I can think of for the incomprehendable protection I was always given. I could not be harmed, yet shown what I had no way of knowing.
I don't preach but do what ever it takes. I am not a bible thumper yet believe in God. I live the absolute beliefe that love with out courage is not love. The more courage you have the more love we are capeable of. Courage takes many forms, courage to work, care for others, yourself and on and on.
We all fail and I am no exception.
Courage became my greatest love.

i am happy with my choice; i like to feel jewish, i wish i were more dedicated to at least going to synagogue on shabat; but never make the time. my lifestyle is a mess. but i feel i am failing myself. am i a bad jew, or basically a non-jew? i converted under Reform. I admire kashrut and all, but can't live like that. Does my conversion have the power to declare me a jew no matter what? come the holidays, i suffer for not taking part. And I am gay. But I dont agree w/ gay or lesbians rabbis.

My last question asked to name atheist "big shots" aka famous atheists...and many people were telling me not to "brag about Kirk" and "Kirk is a source of amusement of us"...well I wasn't bragging about Kirk, nor was I bragging about The Pope nor Mother Tereasa....because I'm not catholic....but guess what..you knew all the people I mentioned didn't you?

Also why do people hate Kirk? I only know he does internet ministry(or something) and was on Growing Pains and has LOTS of kids...so why do they hate him, because he's spreading God's word and is doing what God told him? I mean, wasn't he an atheist and then converted(I don't know the whole story)?

These Christians seem so sure of their own religion they completely ignore any logic or common sense! They simply stick their fingers in their ears and sing, "La La La, I can't hear you!"

Now the hilarious part, just look at how many Christian sects there are! If you're so sure of your religion, how is it that you Christians so desperately separate among yourselves? There are Catholics, protestants, ortodox and etc. I sincerely think you Christians should settle among yourselves before you tackle other's beliefs! You are embarrassing yourselves!

*I'm an Athiest by the way.

With so many detailed, picky, strict rules, how do you possibly expect to obey them all? Aren’t having so many rules a sign of mistrust in you from the church?

This might all be in my head, but I thought I remember hearing a scripture once that said, he who has to be instructed in all things is a foolish servant.

I am an atheist. Even if I wanted to believe I could not - have tried in the past but it always seemed fake.

Most of the time I am happy with my atheism, but sometimes I have days when things are getting to me when I wonder if it would be easier if I could believe in something.

It would be easier if I could just believe that 'things are happening for a reason'; maybe let go of some of the responsibility I feel for every action & thought.

As I say it is not as if I can (or really would want to) suddenly become a believer but it is interesting to me to see my mind thinking these things - it makes me understand why people who have 'faith' in something do not want to give it up & why they may not like atheists & logical argument against religion.

It also makes me see how the mind might be biologically inclined towards belief to retain a certain amount of sanity in extreme stiuations

Do any other atheists ever feel this way? Or does it never cross your mind?

I would like its context explained (I have the text in question), and what it means relative to modern events, if applicable. If this is a quote that Islam no longer believes in, please let me know. If it is incorrect, please give me the correct version and the edition of the text you got your version from.
I encourage people to consider all sides, read the text in question, and make an educated effort to understand it in context and from all sides.

Here is the quote:
Qur'an:9:5 "Fight and kill the disbelievers wherever you find them, take them captive, harass them, lie in wait and ambush them using every stratagem of war."

Thank you for helping us understand.

Many people are so convinced of their religious viewpoints that they cannot fathom how others would disagree with them.

Yet in fact, they often represent a tiny minority among humans. Simultaneously, others are just as genuinely certain of competing and entirely dissonant ideas.

If you hold such ideas with certainty, please explain how you came by such sureness and what keeps you from doubting your conclusions. If you have insight into why others seem to easily avoid dissent internal and external, kindly share your thoughts.
