I'm a Catholic, and I'm quite happy. People like to dwell on the penitential side of Catholicism, but I've found that it can also be a rather joyous religion. As for the nuns you've mentioned, they're likely concentrating on their prayers, not posing for the TV cameras. The "Hail Mary" prayers are a part of the rosary, which is often what you see the nuns praying on television.

Everytime you see a movie star on tv, he looks very happy, he is joking and laughing, he is not praying, leading a dissolute life, people are laughing around him and with him. Do you think he is truly happy and has true peace of mind? No. If he is honest he will admit he is unhappy and his heart finds no rest.
These nuns enjoy peace of mind , a clean conscience and a love for God which I dont think they will exchange for anything else in the world . They are the happiest.
The reason of so many Hail Mary's is that they are reciting a prayer called the Holy Rosary, commonly referred to as the 'Scourge of Satan'. As they vocally recite the Hail Mary prayer, they meditate on the life and events in the Life of Jesus Christ. For example, the Scourging of Our Lord, The Crucifixion, Birth of Our Lord, etc. All these meditations cause one to reflect deeply on the Life of Christ, which is certainly no laughing matter, but something to be pondered about in a dignified manner.

They are saying a prayer to the Blessed Mother called the Holy Rosary. It involes 10 decades of the Hail Mary. What you see as unhappiness in actually concentration, since the rosary is a mediation type prayer. Priests and Nuns take vows, of those chasity is one ( there are others, but of course everyone only wants to focus on the chasity part).

Perhaps you should ask a nun, the next time you see one. You might be surprised to find that they are not nearly as unhappy as you might think they are.
And since nuns don't marry, of course they are not going to have sex.
As for the reasons for so many Hail Marys, again - ask a nun the next time you see one.

Nuns on tv? Never heard of it...unless your talking about a movie, like sister act? (I love that movie)...
When a person says a memorized prayer, it is not only a petition but a meditation on the mysteries of the gospel. Almost a song, or a chant... I believe that living a life of constant meditation upon God, even as one goes about one's daily buisiness, really helps a person through daily problems or situations that can be difficult. It serves as a comfort and a reminder.
I pray both memorized and non-memorized prayer. Sometimes, I just want to have a discussion with God and I do so. Telling Him about my day, my concerns, giving thanks and praise, etc.
Nuns don't need to have sex by the way, their complete fulfillment is found in Jesus and living their entire lives in service to Him.
I think that being a happy Catholic and being happy to be a Catholic are two different things. A person, whoever they are can be happy... wanting to be a Catholic, or being happy to be Catholic is something else. Not everyone can be or wants to be Catholic, and that's o.k.

Being Catholic myself, i think the main problematic element is that such distinctive ex-catholics say that they by no potential extremely practiced first of all and then they the two all started analyzing the bible or attending a distinctive church. Why did not you, or the others, study the bible interior the beginning up? Why did not you study being catholic like the recent faith? And why might in simple terms a catholic be upset yet by no potential a Methodist? THAT stuff is problematic.

Nuns can have sex if they want.
They just can't continue being a nun and have sex.
And the look you are mistaking for unhappiness is really ecstasy ... a type of spiritual and physical intimacy with God that is impossible to explain to others.
You would have to experience it for yourself, to really understand it.
And it's actually better than sex!

Catholics, being human, have a full range of emotions, and no doubt experience most of them over the course of a lifetime. I imagine that all the Catholics don't feel all the emotions in the same order or at the same time, however, but each of them experiences his or her own emotions when they are appropriate.

What a broad question! Wouldn't it be difficult to know whether or not all Catholics are happy? It's kind of like asking whether or not all children are happy..
