I'm an atheist, but I'm also ex-Mormon, and I've spent some time studying comparative religions and the history of religions. Mormons believe that Jesus is the son of God and that he died to atone for the sins of mankind. The full name of their religion has Jesus Christ in the name. There are bunch of ways that Mormons are peculiar compared to other Christians, but from my outside view I think it's silly when other Christians claim that Mormons aren't Christian.

The odd thing is that when I was a child I remember being shocked when a non-Mormon Christian spoke in Sunday School, and referred to "us Christians". I had been taught that we had the only True Church, and I had never heard any Mormon lump us in with other Christians. So back then (35 years ago) Mormons were not teaching their children that they were "Christians" like other Christian sects. Perhaps that has changed in the last couple decades.

So are Baptists and Lutherans and Seventh Day Adventists.

The difference between Mormons and other Christians is the Book of Mormon written by their profit who lead them to Utah. This new holy work is taken as a sequel to the bible by the Mormons. However, all the Mormons started as Christians. They were lead through the American West by their own profit and claim that his teachings are as valid as those of the bible.

I am not making any judgments on Mormons or Christians; I am merely telling you that Christianity has the most sects of any of the big religions. Mormons are just one sect.

Lutherans started when Martin Luther pointed out that the Roman Catholic Church was corrupt. Baptists started out when they said that after the death of Christ the Holy Spirit did NOT fill the apostles with itself and make them speak in tongues; Charismatics are the opposite. All of them are just different flavors of Christianity.

The Mormons had the nerve to write a new book to follow the bible. They still honor the bible as much as any Christian. Mormons do some other things differently, but that is their way. There is one strange branch of Christianity that uses rattlesnakes in its religious services. This is just a different flavor of Christianity.

The Book of Mormon, where the slang term Mormon is derived from, is considered "Another testament of Jesus Christ" and contains an account of his teachings to the people on the American continent. (Look in the bible, in John 14 where he says "Other sheep have I that are not of this fold, to them also must I go")

The Mormon church itself is actually calle d"The church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints" So if , by "Christian" you mean beleiving in Christ and following his teachings, I would say yes.

If, however, you mean some spinoff of catholosism and or protestantism, then no, we do not claim either catholics or Martin Luther as our troots. Although we are very grateful for the truths that they did maintain for a couple thousand years.

Many religious sects claim to believe in Jesus as their Savior, but many truly do not believe in the atoning work of the cross and Jesus' shed blood. Mormons do not know Jesus as the true Savior because they have been taught that the blood of Jesus Christ does not atone for all sins. Mormon apostle Bruce McConkie states:

"But under certain circumstances there are some serious sins for which the cleansing of Christ does not operate, and the law of God is that men must then have their own blood shed to atone for their sins. Murder, for instance, is one of these sins; hence we find the Lord commanding capital punishment."... "President Joseph Fielding Smith has written: "Man may commit certain grievous sins -- according to his light and knowledge -- that will place him beyond the reach of the atoning blood of Christ. If then he would be saved, he must make sacrifice of his Own life to atone -- so far as in his power lies -- for that sin, for the blood of Christ alone under certain circumstances will not avail. . . . Joseph Smith taught that there were certain sins so grievous that man may commit, that they will place the transgressors beyond the power of the atonement of Christ. If these offenses are committed, then the blood of Christ will not cleanse them from their sins even though they repent. Therefore their only hope is to have their own blood shed to atone, as far as possible, in their behalf"' [Doctrines of Salvation, vol. 1, pp. 133-138]" (Mormon Doctrine, Bruce McConkie, pages 92-93)

Even though they don't believe in the central dogmas of the Christian faith, who am I to judge who is in good standing with the LORD? God bless.

Yes because we believe in Jesus, we know that he is God's son and that he died for us and we accept him as our savior and worship him and God.

If someone says we are not Christians, they should go find the closest dictionary and educate more about our religion.
