I would like its context explained (I have the text in question), and what it means relative to modern events, if applicable. If this is a quote that Islam no longer believes in, please let me know. If it is incorrect, please give me the correct version and the edition of the text you got your version from.
I encourage people to consider all sides, read the text in question, and make an educated effort to understand it in context and from all sides.

Here is the quote:
Qur'an:9:5 "Fight and kill the disbelievers wherever you find them, take them captive, harass them, lie in wait and ambush them using every stratagem of war."

Thank you for helping us understand.

The earliest Muslims were in Mecca, where they were persecuted cruelly by all the other Meccans. This Qur'anic verse is taken out of context, if presented by itself. It is for combat only, and nothing more. Kill the infidels - meaning, kill those who persecute - or they will kill you. It is in a wartime setting, not in a peaceful setting.

Illustration:
Imagine Nixon telling the troops in VietNam to "kill them when you see them" - meaning Vietnamese. Would he mean for everyone, soldier and civillian, to walk around killing every Vietnamese they see on the street? Of course not, that would be taking his words out of context. These words would be meant for soldiers in combat only, they would be words of encouragement. If the American soldiers didn't kill Vietnamese when they saw them IN COMBAT, then they risk being killed themselves.

It was for combat. Btw, the Muslims didn't start the combat, the non-Muslim Meccans did. These people were polytheists and Jews. God was not telling the Muslims to fight them for fun, but for self-defense.

The quote is correct, but not complete; the passage goes on to say that if the infidels repent, they get off free. But we infidels have no interest in repenting; we like not kowtowing to an imaginary god five times a day, and will therefore be the targets of Muslims who read and believe this passage for forever.

Most Islamic people do not follow that verse, any more than christians follow the things like that in the Old Testament such as “Thou shalt not suffer a Witch ot Live.”

I would need to read the other surrounding verses and who wrote and from what source.
Anyway, it makes possible sense, and if it is saying what I'll aware of, then it doesn't mean what readers assume it means.

It means exactly what it says. Muslims believe the Quran to be entirely truth. Anyone who misinterprets this is just lying to themselves.
