Christians believe that the Bible is true because it is the word of God. And they believe it is the word of God because the Bible says so. And they believe what the Bible says because it is the word of God. And on and on...
Christians: How do you justify this circular reasoning?

Why do some put so much stock into a religious text that is younger than most of the others? Also, why is it assumed that the other books are wrong when, if you're going by historical timelines, they would seem more valid?

Do you believe there is one true church? Do you believe there are many true churches? Do you believe that all churches are true? Do you believe the true church is in your heart? Do you believe there are two and a half true churches? Do you believe no churches are true?

A little sarcasm there, but really what do you believe?

Clearly, theories of evolution are not in direct conflict with biblical beliefs. In fact, it can easily be understood as evolution being the medium of creation, if one wants to subscribe to such beliefs. One can even read into climate change in Africa turning from forest to dessert and thus the beginings of human evolution as the story of the Garden of Eden; a change from unconcious animal to concious man. So what's the debate about exactly? Why is this debate occuring?

I know it's not about science because debates about whether or not there is evolution should be done without a religious or mythological element between scientists.

This evolution vs religion thing is very much a debate of the public. More often then not creationists who dispute evolution are ignorant to evolutionary theory and supporting evidence, which is unfortunate because these very people are the ones who are against such basic knowledge being taught in schools! What gives?

If even one penny of whay I tythe goes to the defense, the feeding, the clothing, the housing, the sexual abuse insurance (thats right they have it), the cars, the water and wine of any Priest or to pay off their victims of their abuse that would make me and every other parishioner an accomplise don't you think? I can not give anymore because I can't contribute to funding pedophiles or to protect them. I am a christian and believe in Jesus but will not jeopordize the children in any way.

As a Catholic do you still give and protect Priest pedophiles? A lot of priest have done this, not all. How many is OK in your book? 100 victims by 10 priest. 1000 by a hundred.
There were only 714 cases of child abuse by priest in 2006 down from 783 in 05.
Is that number ok to still give money to the church?

I am sure this has been asked before, but not since I have been around. Since the is a hypothetical question, let's assume that you will enjoy decent health for the time you have, but, pick a an amount of time you have left to live and give an example of how you would spend your days. Could be a year, ten or you could live to be one hundred. What would you be doing?

Lately, a lot of questions (and some answers) have had the phrase, "Catholics and Christians". Why this sudden self-contradictory distinction between a religion and one of its denominations?

I'm an atheist because I only believe in things I can see yet I still believe in atoms even though I can't see them (that is NOT a contradiction in any way).

Can't you people see that it's obvious life formed from absolutely NOTHING. What caused the big bang? Nothing. It happened all by itself. What is our proof? Guesses. Yes, it's easy to see that atheists are the smart ones.

Oh, and since there is no God, it's perfectly okay to dilute our movies and tv with immoral acts. It's not like anything makes a difference since when you die that's it.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to pretend to be happy even though I know I will cease to exist FOREVER once I die.

Yes, being an atheists is the only smart way to go. Any self-righteous person that loves to attack Christians because they have no life would agree with me. Do you?

If you knew what Love, Joy and Peace were, you would already be it and wouldn't be looking for it, right? And so what you're looking for is just your concept of what it is, and not the real thing. If these things come and go according to your experience, they are just ideas about love, joy and peace, because the real thing does not come and go, and is not a dualistic concept; it is part of your Being.

If you don't know what you're looking for, how can you ever find it by looking? Perhaps this is where faith and devotion come in.

I don't know where I'm going, and I don't know how to get there, but I'm willing to travel. This is devotion.

I've been noticing that there seems to be some sort of correlation between an accepting, unquestioning attitude and adherence to religion. Time and again I see religious people accept what they're told, even though what they're told is illogical or just plain nonsense. On the other hand, the non-religious people I know will question or challenge those same silly assertions or dictates.

Also, the non-religious people I know have more common sense. They understand how things work and the constraints that physics places on the material world. It's amazing how 2 different people can witness the same thing and have such radically different ideas of what happened.

In fairness, I do know some religious people who do NOT suffer from these shortcomings. I've been generalizing but experience seems to bear me out, in general.

Does anybody have any rational explanation for this observed difference between the religious and the non-religious? Is there a link of some sort to religion?

I don't know when he said it. I read it in"The Atheist Bible: an illustrious collection of irreverent thoughts".

2007-07-17 18:41:57 · 13 answers · asked by Anonymous

I'm reasonably intelligent, but science just isn't my thing. I read the wikipedia article, and a few other websites, but I'm still pretty confused.

I believe in evolution, but many creationists say that carbon-14 dating is circular logic. They present it as:
"How do you know hold that fossil is?"
"It was found in rock that is 100 million years old!"
"How do you know how old the rock is?"
"It was found with a fossil inside that is 100 million years old!"

I'm sure that explanation isn't right, but I'd like someone to tell me a little more about it, in as basic terms as you can. :) Thanks!

How do you like this theory.
God cast Satan to earth Mary was rapped by an Incubus gave birth to Christ who is said to be the savior but really is the son of the devil spreading his pestilence which than creates Religion.Which than sends it's preists to molest children. And then you have bible bashers who are out collecting souls for Satan.(Satan said I will make you fishers of souls).Than you have the wars that are caused by religion.Satan also performs miracles.Christ and Satan are coming at the same time and you won't know which one is which so it comes down to one thing Christ,God & Satan are the one being just like your Holy spirit.
