Why do some put so much stock into a religious text that is younger than most of the others? Also, why is it assumed that the other books are wrong when, if you're going by historical timelines, they would seem more valid?

Ok, firebreather, how old is Genesis? Were you there when it was written? Can you honestly say that it was written before any of the other religious texts?

I never said they were superior. I said that they would seem more valid, since they are older. Most of these, from what little I do know about them, teach the same fundamentals as the Bible (love your neighbor, don't kill anyone, etc.) What I'm really asking here is, Do you believe in the Bible just because the Bible says that you should believe in it?

Because they want to, for one reason or another. Whether it's tradition, rearing, faith, comfort - whatever the excuse, ultimately it is because they wish to believe. Same as everybody else, if you think about it.
Peace!

people believe in any religion because it is an answer to the most common questions like "why are we here?" "where do we come from" "are we alone" also alot of time people don't feel the need to question their religion cos they use that cliche word FAITH now i am not saying people who are devoted to a religion are wrong...i am just saying following a religion blindly without doubting a little bit is just ridiculous....but just because the bible may be younger than the other religious texts doesnt mean the other texts are any more valid, they were all written by people who attempted to explain the unknown and as time passed by(after the bible) more religious texts like the Qua'rn or the book of mormon for example came along and i think they will continue to pop up as the world continues to exist....now i don't doubt there is a God and religion is a great for supporting morals and well being apart from the many wars and people who have died over it...ha but anyway there is probably a god but to put 100% of your faith into a text written and revised many times by people is just absurd....lets just say ignorance is bliss

Much of this question can be answered by looking at how ancient peoples viewed the world versus how we view the world today. What it comes down to is a confusion of mythos and logos.
The mythic world view is not interested in an accurate portrayal of history; mythical time is cosmic, ongoing, "dreamtime". In the minds of the folks who wrote Genesis, the creation of the world was seen as a cosmic, eternal event. They were not interested in portraying what "actually" happened; rather, they were concerned with what that meant on a spiritual level. Therefore, the old stories are of mythical proportions.
Round about the Renaissance, there was a huge upsurge in the importance of logos, or the logical worldview. This was awesome, as it led to many scientific advancements. However, over time, logos took over as the only "real" worldview, and the importance of mythic stories was shoved aside.
Fearing the demise of their religion, some Christians attempted to re-evaluate the stories of the Bible in a literal way, since logic and reason threatened the spiritual model. This led to the mess you see today, where biblical literalists cling to the idea that there is a real Noah's ark out there somewhere.

The bible is the story of how God brought about the salvation of mankind by sending one very special person into the world.
All of this was announced over 2000 years before it happened. All of it was written down by some 40 different writers, over that same period of time.
And all of it came to pass, just as it was written.
No other "book" of any kind can claim that.
And the world wasn't forever changed by any of the people in those other books, either.
Only Jesus, who is God and who is the one the old testament of the bible anticipated, could have, in the brief space of three years, without military conquest, without political power, without writing a single line, or traveling more than a few score miles, so profoundly affected the course of human events.
Believe it ... or don't!

The Bible's words has been changed so many times over the centuries that it's not even funny. The real Bible was written in Assyrian and put in a museum under tight security.
It frightens me when the Bible gets into man's hands, because it is a sacred, holy document, that should be handled with care. Many pages or chapters are pulled out of the Qur'an (The Bible) and misinterpreted and re-written by higher priests. It mentioned in the holy book that if anything is written or altered, a curse will be set on the one's who changed it. Making it so hard to read that people begin to question God and God's existence.

A bible verse can mean so many different things to so many people...it will always be controversal. I just believe what I think God puts on my heart...the Bible might be totally right or way wrong...none of us will ever really know but if we can get something out of the Bible to better ourselves spiritually (even if it's only 1 or 2 verses), then it was worth it. We do the best with what we can. We're only human and probably can never comprehend the Bible the way God wants us to...maybe that's the problem. Just trust in God and always pray for the best....and always, always thank Him for what He's blessed us with.

Which other books are you referring to that are older than the bible?
The bible is about faith and history. Whenever older texts are found from the bible, it supports the current translations of the bible, indicating that something has kept it being accurate. Also, the historical things in the bible are true. While people can argue what constitutes a "day" in Genesis, biblical scholars can show that the old testament predictions have come true.
Finally, religion and life needs an element of faith. The saying that you have to believe in something or you'll fall for anything is very true. Everybody has to stand for something.
Love is not something that you can see written on the forehead of your loved one, we take it by faith that when they say they love us, they mean it. I have faith that God loved me enough, that he sent his only son, for whomever believe in him, shall not die but have everlasting life. That whoever believes in his heart and confesses with his mouth that he is the Son of God will not pass away.
I hope that helps.

In my opinion, most of the people who believe that the Bible is true were taught the Bible when they were very young and didn't have the intellectual ability to question what their parents and the nuns and priests taught them.
Why they still believe it as adults is a mystery. Maybe it's intellectual laziness or a lack of reason and common sense.

The same can be asked of any religion or non-religion. The answer is faith. It is a primal need of mankind to understand the un-understandable with religion. Science cannot explain the origins of the Earth and the universe so people rely on religious faith. Any monotheistic religion also (by definition) believes that all other explanations are either wrong or can be explained in a way that agrees with their faith.

The bible has been handed down from one generation to the next, from the time of the prophets and apostles down to the computer age. We believe it's true because our forefathers believe it is. It is a record of the spiritual events and God's dealings with his children so that they may know his goodness and exercise faith in Him.

You really should know more about what you think you know, so you don't sound so foolish! You are so wrong! A lot of the Bible is first hand testimony!
Romans 1:19 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20 For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.
