Asking questions to gain knowledge is great, I encourage it! Has our society changed so much that asking rude and disrespectful questions is considered okay and acceptable?

I'm reading this book called Blue Like Jazz. In it, the author asserts that a lot of people choose not to believe in God/Jesus because of all the things that have been done in the name of God. For example, the crusades, televangelists, hypocrites, whatever. Do these reasons explain why you don't believe? Or is it something else? Why is the idea of believing in something bigger than us seem so unbelievable?

"Genocide and cultural eradication always go hand in hand with missionary zeal. In many cases every trace of the conquered society's religious writings, practices, icons, and even buildings were destroyed in the name of conversion from worship of gods considered evil, and religious customs labeled as heresies. What generally results from past crusades is the conqueror's religion replacing or predominantly blending with the conquered culture's former religious practice, making its religion almost unrecognizable. Christianity falls into the latter category, having been the victim of the Roman Empire, under the Emperor Constantine, who blended the Christian Church with the institutionalized "pagan" practices of Rome and eliminated any semblance of either the Jewish religious influence or the first church Jesus established during his ministry"

I belive in Christ, so do not think I am trying to be offensive.

I recently read a book about heaven, and it says that the only way to get to heaven is if you believe in Christ. What about the people who only believe in God? Do they also go, or not?

No judgements, just opinions. This question is not designed to offend anyone and is meant to generate a sincere discussion amoung Christians. If anyone is found to be using abusive or potentially hurtful language towards people of the Christian faith or towards those of the Gay Community, I will not hesitate to report abuse on you.

In my previous question, the Christian concensus is that Jesus's actions spoke louder than his words:

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=ArVE4d1g3Rjyedm6_kWoihLd7BR.?qid=20070702093528AAfxhHK

I see Jesus's actions were more directed at giving aid to people and not about prohibiting behavior. Based on what you know about Jesus, would someone emulating Jeusus today spend more time trying to prevent sin, like pouring large amounts of energy into fighting gay marriage, or would a Christ-like person spend more time feeding the hungry (bread into fish for the 5000), helping the sick (lazarus, the littel girl, lepers), and standing up for the persecuted (the prostitute being stoned)?

Are Gay people not being metaphorically stoned by some parts of society today? Jesus told the prostitute to "Go and sin no more" - but what if he new she would sin again? Would he still not have the compassion to stop the crowd from killing her?

The appearance of structures that are irreducibly complex. For example, a cell that cannot perpetuate itself unless it is a complete entity. Its individual parts are not viable.

Or maybe a structure like the inner ear, where thousands of extremely delicate structures have to work in harmony in order for anything to work... half an ear would do no good.

Maybe DNA or something of that sort... take away one part and it's nothing.

Does not irreducible complexity point to the involvement of some intelligence at "the beginning"? What or who that intelligence is would certainly be up for debate but it seems a logical impossibility to believe that no intelligence was involved.

So, how do you explain it if you assume no intelligence along the way?

I understand that some can go to extremes but why not take care of our earthly home? I know that some think the earth will be destroyed and recreated but...

Why not conserve your resources?

Why not add less pollutants in the world?

Why not care for the animals?

Why not pick up some trash in your area?

Why not?

last week replied to question and it got removed
the question was about who created hell
my answer contained the following

1. I said hell is based on a fictional book (like it or not the bible is fictional - it was written by humans and its contents are not real facts - unless you really believe the sun goes around the earth etc.) - (yes fiction CAN contain some truth and be based around real people and real places - that dose not make it a factual book)
http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/fiction

2. I said god is an alien - (an alien or Extraterrestrial life form is life originating outside of the Earth. - if it created earth then it must have originated outside of the Earth).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extraterrestrial_life

3. I referred to god as 'it' - (as opposed to he or she - i had already used the word god in the sentence so it was obvious what i was referring to and i do not know its sex or if it has a sex.) - (To continuosly use the same noun is bad english.)

Christians, for thousands of years, have accomplished powerful things. We have educated and fed the masses, healed, obtained spiritual knowledge, done heroic feats and other miracles. Why do we acknowledge that God has the POWER and deserves the glory?

If we may obtain all things, be all things, why not believe it all comes from us? It is recorded that some, such as the apostles, have been empowered to do almost all things. Peter gave the glory to God chastizing those who believed he was God. (Acts 3:11-12) Such a Christian could become self-sufficient to the point of believing all things are for and come from himself. Having eternal life, he could be all things to himself eternally. He could eternally love only himself circling forever into himself. Is this Heaven on Earth or Hell itself?

Given that no one is capable of sustaining himself alone, is it not a generosity that God has us give Him the glory? Isn't He saving us from ourselves?

Yours in Christ Jesus, Grace

With so many huge stretches of ocean with no land nearby (and therefore impractical to fish there), it seems absurd to think that the Earth was "designed" specifically for us when a good 3/4 of it is pretty much unusable to us. I wonder if Christians can come up with a reason for their god making most of the Earth uninhabitable by the humans he supposedly created the Earth and everything on it specifically FOR.

So...whatcha got, guys?
