Simply defined cult is a group or sect bound together by veneration of the same thing, be it person, ideal, religious belief etc.

More recently "cult" is a term designating a cohesive group of people (generally, but not exclusively a relatively small and recently founded religious movement) devoted to beliefs or practices that the surrounding culture or society considers to be outside the mainstream.

HOWEVER, just because something is a cult (or outside the mainstream) does not mean it's inherantly dangerous. The danger comes when the cult has harmful beliefs and also cuts itself off from the greater population

Although isolation does not necessarily = harm. For example, the Amish live apart for others, but are certainly not harmful to others.

It's when a cult has ideas like "sex with children is okay" like the Children of God cult had, that a cult becomes dangerous.

Hope that helps!

I see a cult as a group of people who give over free will to one person (or a body of people). From what I've read, when this happens, the individual is lost into the group and everyone about them, including friends/family are lost too.

I think it's dangerous, because we should always think for ourselves. Also, cults have the rep of being involved in criminal activities.

A cult is not a religion. A cult is a group of people controlled by a leader that brainwashes the people and makes them do whatever he/she says. As you can see, this leader might be sick in the mind and might tell the followers to kill people and that is why they are dangerous. Many people call religions a cult just because they are very insecure.

I am a Mormon and not a member of any cult.

most religious cults have a leader with absolute authority and everyone follows what the leader says. The members believe the leader is infallible and one with God. Usually because the leader has declared that this is the reality. I've been in two of them but woke up and learned to think with my own mind, haha. And I'm still into spirituality, even after that :-)

Stereotypical cults require thier members to give up posessions and family/friends to benifit the cult leader. They promise great things and typical lead nowhere. Catholicism seems to view cults as any nonorthodox religion outside thier beliefs.

A cult is a smaller religion with so much control that you have a hard time leaving it. A cult often isolates its members to maintain control. The word cult is incredibly overused and misused, as there are few religions that are really cults.

A group of people that are controlled by men or a mans ideology and beliefs..It leads to isolation and believing they are the only ones that have the truth..Brainwashing is a real problem and believe it or not there are all types of denominational and nondenominational churches affected by cultism..Do a study on it...

God shut the church down that I was involved in for years because even though we thought we were in God's will we actually had cultish activities going on..It is a good thing we were listeners of God and the warnings in his word...I might add that it did not start out that way.....

Cultism comes from religious thinking outside of God's will and His truth....
