you are told from childhood that you are a sinner and need to be forgiven. you are told you're not worthy of god's love. you are told you can never measure up to jesus, because he was perfect. you are told that jesus died on the cross for your sins.

what a sad, negative way to bring up a child. it sounds like the bullying you would hear on the playground.

christianity seems to dictate that you must be self loathing. it seems to beat down your self image.

i'm hoping to read christian answers proving me otherwise, thanks

It touched on themes of religion and power. I don't want to put out spoilers, just in case someone TiVo'd it, but if anyone else watched it, wasn' t it interesting?

The 4400 is about people who have interesting powers thanks to a substance called "promycin," and how the rest of the world deals with them. One person, a 16-year-old boy, developed godlike powers of attraction and compulsion. And a regular character is laying down the groundwork to be seen as "a new messiah, a savior."

What did you think of it, if you watched it, and do you think the plotlines relate to real-world religion at all?

I saw one when I was a little girl. My mother was driving and I was about 4 years old standing up in the back seat looking out the rear window. I saw her in the sky and she was smiling at me. I have a very vivid memory about this.

here are 2 different ways of looking at life - christianity and paganism

Christians are naturally evil (born sinners) and have to spend most of their time fighting it. Pagans, at least those that i know, are naturally good, and "sinning" is an atrocity and something that we generally don't do.

i don't think you can argue those 2 points. my question is, can you see how different those outlooks are and can you understand why people might turn to paganism instead of christianity, when christianity seems so negative?

It has been demonstrated time and time again that we, as humans, are drawn to tragedy. The longevity of Shakespeare is a great example of this.

Every night on the news, tragedy sells over good news. There is hardly room for any uplifting or inspirational stories.

We watch the public meltdowns of celebrities with significantly more interest than we pay to their careers.

Even movies like 'Titanic', in which pretty much everyone knew the tragic ending before they bought their ticket, became one of the most successful movies of all time. During it's theatrical run, many people paid to see the movie over and over again.

Bottom line : we love tragedy.

One could argue that the Bible is the original tragedy. If the Bible had presented a happier ending, would it have become as significant piece of writing as it has?

I read someone's answer to an earlier question about evolution and this person honestly seemed to believe that there were no Transitional Fossils. Is that right? Are there really people this willfully ignorant in the world?
I mean the evidence is irrefutable. There are literally THOUSANDS of transitional fossils. Here is just a small example;
http://www.talkorigins.org/faqs/faq-transitional.html
Now this is highly condensed and the author has tried to simplify it to the point that someone with an average education can understand it.
Here is another one but this one is highly technical;
http://www.asa3.org/asa/resources/Miller.html

So you see that not only are there literally thousands of transitional fossils, they each give us a great deal of information about the fossil record and the lines of descent they took part in.
Anyone who denies the existence of transitionals is either; willfully ignorant, or brainwashed to the extreme.
Either way, they have my pity.

Anyone else notice how a portion Protestant Evangelicalism attacks the Catholic priesthood yet Evangelicals are turning ministry or "shepherding" into a family business which take in vast amounts of money? Does it only go into literature and TV broadcasting fees? How many hospitals have these men built? How many orphanages? How many soup kitchens?

examples the Olsteins, Haggees, Grahams, Roberts, Schullers etc etc.. can anyone provide fiancial statements for these family run churches/ministries.

That headline was just an attention getter. When Christians marry, it is supposed to be for life, no matter what, right? What if they lose their love for each other? Doesn't that lessen the meaning of marriage? I don't know, tell me what you think.

I'm a practicing Christian, but a few years ago was an agnostic. It has never bothered me when people had beliefs that didn't agree with mine.

I have had friends who were Muslim, Shinto, Buddhist, Hindu, and I have had many friends who were atheists. Disagreement is not a basis for fear, hatred or distrust.

Why are some people so unwilling to accept religious beliefs or ideas that differ from their own?

By the way, nobody forced me to become a Christian. I believe God opened my heart and mind to what I perceive to be the truth.

As far as I understand it, the main positions are:

1. Neither divorce nor remarriage are allowed -- described below. (A conservative Protestant view)
2. Divorce is OK, but not remarriage. (A second conservative Protestant view)
3. Divorce is OK in cases of adultery or desertion; remarriage is OK. (A conservative/mainline Protestant view)
4. Divorce is OK for many reasons; remarriage is OK. (A mainline/liberal Protestant view)
5. Divorce is impossible, unless the marriage never existed. (Roman Catholic)
6. Divorce is OK in cases of marriage breakdown; remarriage is OK. (Religious liberal and secular view.)

When will you wake up and see the truth? Why do you have faith in unproven theories? How can you deny the creator who is ultimately responsible for your existence in this world today? How can you be so confused? Why do you choose darkness, and uncertainty in debatable scientific theories over FAITH IN GOD? Genesis 1:1 "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth".

or at least the yahoo gods exist. i rencently had a question not posted and received a violation notice instead. i emailed them back demanding that they give me the reason it was a violation, and for the first time, THEY REPLIED! they said they would investigate it!!!

do you think the yahoo gods really exist? is this proof?

p.s. here's the question that got a violation

Question: If we're all sinners, then doesn't that mean nobody is going to heaven?

Question Details: we're born sinners (according to christianity) we can repent, but ultimately we're sinners and we'll die sinners. sinners don't go to heaven, plain and simple, so why try? (non christian)
