Even if everything in the bible were true (and I don't believe that it is), don't you realize that the actual words were spoken years before they were written which in itself subjects them to change, and were also spoken in a different language based on a different culture? Many christians that I have met speak as though the words of the bible are exactly what Jesus said. That is just not true. How many christians actually realize this?

Geology shows that fossils are of different ages.
Paleontology shows a fossil sequence, the list of species represented changes through time.
Taxonomy shows biological relationships among species.
Evolution is the explanation that threads it all together.
Creationism is the practice of squeeezing one's eyes shut and wailing "does not!.

Does this sound familiar..?

Hello, I believe I remember that Jesus said something about, as a man thinks, so is he? Did he say this or something similar to, we are what we think?

In Matthew 12:43-45, Jesus says:

"When an evil spirit comes out of a man, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. Then it says 'I will return to the house I left.' When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean and put in order. Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that man is worse than the first."

Does this mean that the evil spirit eventually goes back into the same man that it was expelled from, and is joined there by seven additional evil spirits (who are even more wicked)? Is this why the condition of the man ends up even worse than before?

Thank you

The proper place for the study of religious beliefs is in a church or temple, at home, or in a course on comparative religions, but not in a biology class.
There is no place in our world for an ideology that seeks to close minds, force obedience, and return the world to a paradise that never was. Students should learn that the universe can be confronted and understood, that ideas and authority should be questioned, that an open mind is a good thing.
Education does not exist to confirm people's superstitions, and children do not learn to think when they are fed only dogma.

Watcha think..?

Is it okay to call yourself a Christian if you only believe parts of the Bible and not the whole thing? I wonder what people think If the Christian Faith's foundation includes the Bible, are you still considered a Christian if you do not believe it?

They're like gays. They talk about marriage but the fact is there can be no marriage for homos. It is an abomination to the LORD. Isn't asking a question that doesn't even mention the LORD an abomination by that same theory too? This IS religion.

I have been raised SDA & while I don't attend church like I should I still believe the core ideas of the Seventh Day Adventist church. The man that I hope to marry, the love of my life, is a devout Catholic. We’ve discussed, in great detail what we each believe & we’re at a place where we agree 2 disagree on this topic. I love him & I'm not going 2 try 2 change him & he feels the same way about me. We’re both being very understanding & respectful of eachothers beliefs. However, when we talk about children, we tend 2 bump heads. We want 2 raise them in both churches, but how do you tell your kids that Saturday is the Sabbath, yet you have 2 go 2 church on Sunday too? Or tell them that they have 2 go 2 confession, but mommy doesn't believe in it? There are several other issues that we need 2 work on, these are just examples. But I would really appreciate any advice you can give. Are there any websites that can help with topics like this? I know there has 2 be a compromise.

Are there any Christians out there Afraid of people questioning their beliefs? Where do the unbelievers come up with this stuff? With The Almighty God on our side, why would we fear anything?

For instance, I had a fundie tell me that when a person is in church and a really moving song is played/sung and they get the chills, that the chills are really the Holy Spirit moving through their body. She also says members of the church congregation, on occasion, get annointed with "Holy Laughter". When she tells the story you realize the person just got the giggles and couldn't quit. We've all experienced both of these things no matter what religion we are, or no religion at all. When you tell her those things happen to you all the time, her -- brain -- cannot -- compute -- and she changes the subject. Is it just that they close themselves off so much from the rest of society that they are just out of touch with reality?

Did you know that in Islam, women have a great many rights, and in many cases religiously are even above the men, such as when they are mothers and the children must obey their mother first above their father? Did you know that in the case of divorce, she has the right to full custody of the children and the father comes fourth in line after the maternal bloodline has been exhausted?

Did you know that if a woman wants a baby and the man does not, he must still allow that to happen because it's her right, not duty, to have a baby? Even if he doesn't want a baby or children at all, he must still peacefully and agreeably fulfill that duty?

People have this image of Islam, and they take it all from the news. Did it ever occur to anyone that the news is news because what happened is not the usual? For example, people love to state that Islam says to kill women for being raped. Nope, because Islam says to stone the rapist and leave the victim alone. What do you think?

The Christian postings on R&S are totally devoid of any style or flash. I think they would attract more interest if they weren't so terribly ill-worded....we won't touch upon the subject of their poor spelling.

I have always held that we Atheists have a bit of an edge because of the generally higher level of education we possess; however, even a mediocre education should allow for a bit more creative question than "Why Do You Accuse Me Of Pushing Christ On You?"...one of the worst-written questions ever.

Jack is, of course, more sensitive to such things, being a consummate practitioner of the written word, but surely others have noticed this as well? What is the reason for the generally poor quality of the Christian fundamentalist postings?

This stylish question has been brought to you courtesy of Jack, the Simon Cowell of R&S

Science is on the verge of creating life from scratch, I wonder what Christians have to say about that?
