This question has been asked many times before, but it is a really good question!
I thought along the same lines as you - that atheism is not having spirituality or religion, not have having a belief system - but this is not true. Atheism is a belief system!
Atheism: a (way of negating a word) + theism (the belief in one God as the creator and ruler of the universe, without rejection of revelation) - therefore, atheism is a doctrine or belief that there is no God.
Therein lies the answer - it IS A BELIEF SYSTEM - not believing that there is a God IS A BELIEF - it is a doctrine. It is a belief system. It is a belief that governs the lives of those who hold it.
And since it is a belief system, it makes its way to Yahoo R&S.
But if you think about it..... not believing in God....
Scratch that.....
Not believing that there is a God, takes much more effort then believing that there is a God.
As a believer, all creation points to God. The believer sees the beauty of creation and the complexity and the mystery and can't help but believing there is a God! He feels called to his or her creator - the believer feels God calling out to him/her. The believer longs to love, worship and cry out to the one who loved him/her first....!!!
But for an atheist it takes much more effort. Rather than simply saying, "I believe in One God...." they must constantly dismiss, deny and declare everything to be a coincedence.
How much work does it take to deny God?
It takes a lot - easiest would be to NOT CARE, but atheists CARE - and that is the second reason they are on Yahoo R&S.
They have already put so much effort into convincing themselves that God does not exist that they cannot stop there.... to protect their belief system they must try to convince others that God does not exist as well. They need to protect their belief system by expanding their borders; then they can feel safe. They feel threatened in their belief and so some even go on the offensive - they attack those who do not believe that there is not a God.
And there it is in a nutshell:
- Atheists have STRONG beliefs,
- Atheism takes much effort to maintain - especially when you feel threatened by Believers who seem to be circling in on your doctrine.
- Finally, when threatened, they lash out at believers.............
Ironically, most times they are doing the "premptive" strikes - they are not attacked by believers (usually), but fear that they will be. They come to Yahoo R&S to make themselves feel stronger by attacking first, by congregating in numbers and by justifying their doctrinal beliefs to others.
Theirs too is a religion...one they feel is worth fighting for....
Peace be with you.....

The truth is that anti-theism is a religious belief, as well as a spiritual one. If you have monotheist beliefs (A belief if one God), you must allow for there to be someone that will have the flip side of that coin and believe in no God, or Multi- Theism, otherwise known as believing in many gods at one time. No matter which spiritual religious belief you hold to, those people still belong in the religion area, and have a right to their opinion.
I can see your point, though, of why they tend to blast at people that are not of their particular viewpoint that there is no God, and, yet refuse to allow for those of us that do have monotheistic beliefs to have our own faith. It pains me to try to comprehend why they would want to be so hypocritical in that fashion themselves, while calling those of us that believe hypocrites if we mess up. Not that we don't give them plenty of ammunition to fire at us. But still...
Hope this helps...

Grace (not law) unto you, and peace (not division),
from God our Father and the Lord Jesus -> Christ.
Of impure & pure religon, atheism is one sort.
To me it's the same as Judaism or Legalism.
Law is both natural and "spiritual", abuse.
Law is "both good and evil", ending "evil".
NT law is as snaring & deadly as OT law.
Best thing to do is ignore it, let it vanish.
Notice how the dead sea is vanishing,
now that ppl are turning away from law.
How silly to think law could disannul Grace.
Mention of God does not negate God.
Mention of God gives existence to God
Atheists got suckered into warfare by X-ians.
Now they're as annoying as the X-ians were.
Peace isn't won by wars, but by flushing law as dung.
No law, or ordinance, is mightier than understanding.
Winning a sides war is as dumb as losing a sides war.
Let there be LIGHT(ONLY)--->and there was LIGHT(ONLY):
The GRACE(ONLY) of our Lord Jesus->Christ with you->all. Amen.
