In 670 Arabia, if you didnt assert a religious calling, you couldnt be considered a leader. Period. Muhammad's story is to real-life (savage) to be made up by some later poetic fairy tale writer making up a religion. Someone making-up a Prophet would be more likely to make him sound miraculous and magical.
Consider the story of the Quran. Muhammad recieved it over twenty-plus years, exactly how we would expect a warlord to make-up his rules. Most people get some kind of new idea or ephiphany daily or weekly. The story of the Quran functions perfectly within normal human experience and is exactly how you would imagine Muhammad to slowly construct and justify his rules.
If Muhammad had simply come down from a mountain with a big book of rules, being the ignorant warlord he was, we would either dismiss the story as being totally made up, or we would call it a miracle and believe as sheep.
