Didn't he marry a rich merchant widow?
===edit==
Edatorial note: Why do I get the thumbs down when I said essentially the same thing as "Bro. Reuben Muhammad" below? Is it because of his name? People are funny.

He wasn't rich.
He was orphaned like at 7 years old.
And later on when he was older he married wife who was rich.
In Islam the woman doesn't have to give any money she makes, inherits or that is hers to her husband, father, mother, children or anyone..only if she wants to.
So if you say he was rich than it must have been some of the money his wife gave him (out of love).
but besides i never heard anything about him being a wealthy man.
he lived a moderate life
and had food, clothes and shelter
that's all he needed to survive.

this is complete ignorance... Muhammad was never rich. he was a successful merchant before he started to teach his belief. Muhhamad showed many great qualities such as good managment and great determination. such qualities are traits of successful persons even now..! and a man with such qualities doesnt need a widow to make him rich ...because he is independent. Muhhamad gave everything for his reliegion ...but he was opposed by the wealthy capitalists in mecca..who saw in his religion a force to change their oppressive social structure and greedy economical system that was based on cruel interest. they enjoyed slaves, imported prostitutes, and excessive drinking and Muhhamd called for equality, pureness and compassion. because of these he suffered prosecutions and later he was forced to leave mecca his home town to another town in the north where he established his state and his commnuity according to his belief. His enemies didnt leave him alone there also..! so they waged wars to destroy his community.Therefore he establised an army to defend Almadinhah..and all the battles he went in with his army were "self defence"...! later Muhhamd put mecca under his control but didnt stay in it ..he stayed in his political capital and formed the law that governms its citizens..what mulims call "sharia".. then Muhhamad died and didnt leave behind him neither Gold nor silver but his belief. Now, a man who goes through all this..would wait for a widow to make him rich?! and would money buy people that would follow your guidance even after your death? or defend you with thier lives?! and go to wars for you?! I hope you start to think logical and to rise above ignorance, hate and race. and if u dont, then its your choice :)

Apparently he didn't get that rich, but so what? As the messenger of god, he had no need of money -- he could have anything he wanted just by asking for it. "Obey the messenger", says the Qur'an. The more interesting question is: how did he sell that bill of goods to the peasants?

How rich, exactly, is "so rich"? Do you have any figures?
How fast, exactly, is "so fast"? Do you have any timelines?
It is a matter of historical record that the Prophet's first Wife, Khadijah, was known for her wealth and beauty.

He worked with his uncle...i dont remember exactly what he did, but he learned his trade well. He met his future wife through the trade that he did, and yes, she was wealthy. He didn't even get the message of prophethood until way after he married her.
