Okay, I know this isn't a religious question, but I would like to hear from you all on this subject.

My sister is in a horrible marriage. Several months ago (probably close to a year now) she and her husband invited a friend of my sister's to share their home and their bed. (Not a smart decision, but not mine to make). This has lead to all sorts of problems. The main one being that her husband now has nothing to do with my sister and spends all of his time doting over this new woman. The new girl tried to leave the relationship at one point and when she said she would stay, she made my sister's husband chose between her and my sister. Needless to say, she's completely broken up about the whole situation. What would you all do to help her and comfort her. Obviously, she's leaving him (going to come stay with me, I'll have it no other way). But how do I help her get through it?

I've heard that they get really upset and will be rude to you if you don't speak it, I honestly can't speak a word of French without making some major mistakes. If someone came to my country for a vacation I wouldn't expect them to learn a new language just to visit. I also wouldn't become angry if people in another country didn't speak English...I just don't understand what the big deal is.

There are certain things in the bible, especailly the Old Testament, that are difficult to believe literally. For example, we have the Great Flood. How can two of each species restore the world? How can Moses and his wife and children, restart the Human population?

And then there's the Creation. How can one man and one woman start the entire race of Humans? Its said that they had three children, all boys. So, that leaves four men, and one woman. Not nearly enough people to keep the gene pool going. Were more people placed on Earth after the banishment from Eden? There's a large gap of time between Creation and the next story, which i can't remember.

Also, you have David and Goliath. How can one small rock knock down a man said to be larger than any man? Could this merely be a representation of a small nation defeating a large? This could be the Battle of Thermopolie (think of the movie 300)

Is perhaps these events written more symbolically, but misinterpreted literally?

If so does it cause problems with the family? It would if my family knew I was Wiccan but since they rejected me many years ago and I had to cut them off it does not because I have not spoken to or seen any family in 12 years. They were upset because I dared to attend a different church than they did.

"Beware of turning into the enemy you most fear. All it takes is to lash out violently at someone who has done you some grievous harm, proclaiming that only your pain matters in this world. More than against that person's body, you will then, at that moment, be committing a crime against your own imagination." Ariel Dorfman; novelist, playwright & essayist

My husbands aunt who never gives me presents gave me one this year. I really don't care for presents because growing up we never celebrated christmas. I waited and opened it and it was a big tin of cookies?? I told my daughter,"Hey look at what YOU got and she jumped up and down and said cookies!!" It was so cute she was walking around telling everybody Santa said they can have cookies..

Anyhow this woman never liked me before I was married she was very mean to me even went as far as to pushing me once.
Now that I'm married to her nephew I don't care for the woman I got tired of her bullying me so I said finally," OK I'll give you a reason to be upset now" So I fired back when she would say stuff I don't aknowledge her presence (she used to ignore me when I was just getting to know the family)
So anyhow that present just annoyed me!! but then again everything about her annoys me
She's trying very hard to be nice I can't Stand it.

I know that Hajj is compulsory on everyone (except those who cannot afford it.) I was wondering, I know some people who didn't do their Hajj until they cleared all their loans and debts first, because they wanted to go with "halal" money. If someone goes to Hajj even with those debts, will their Hajj still be accepted?

Also, do you have to do Hajj with your own money? Will a woman's Hajj be accepted if her husband pays for her Hajj trip?

It's pretty much a fact that between Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, Castro et.all, are responsible for well over 150 MILLION deaths under their atheist regimes.
That number reflects their stand on 'the value of human life' , cant imagine where they stand on issues like human rights and freedoms?

What I mean: I have been off balance spiritually in a specific situation in my life for a few years now. I pray. I think. I ponder. I analyze. But this situation hasn't resolved much.

It's like: I'm here at point X on the spiritual map. I can see point Y in the distance, which I'm pretty sure is where I need to be. But I can't seem to make much progress getting there.

As I see it, I can relax and try to learn something about delaying gratification -- and risk the spiritual mistake of not working hard enough to resolve my own problems ...

or I can redouble my efforts and risk the mistake of ignoring God's lesson of "Relax and let it ride for a while."

Input from anybody who has experienced something like this is welcomed.

Which do you think is the more appropriate approach: trying to ban or shout down an opposing viewpoint, or actually trying to ANSWER a difficult and thought-provoking question?

Three times I've posed a simple question: how is it we humans know things like murdering infants, slavery, and genocide are wrong, but a supposedly infinitely compassionate god does not? And three times, the report-monkeys have jumped on it, shrieking and beating their chests, and managed to get them banned. Is it really THAT hard for you to confront such a glaring contradiction to your dogma? Is your faith REALLY such a house of cards that you must try to ban or destroy anything that disagrees with you, rather than risk THINKING about the ramifications of what you believe?

no really, i mean all of this. everything and everyone.

why must theology and dogma, and religion in general be so absolutely _Serious_?

who else thinks that religion makes people too serious, which in turn leads to serious consequences...usually negative?
