Is it okay to ask my family to each bring a dish? I have NEVER done this before, so I want the food to be good, and I know everyone has a great dish. If I am offering to have it, does that mean I gotta do ALL the work? Its just family, no friends or anything. And we are a pretty laid back crowd

I Knew a boy who once had his eye out with a sharp stick,
That will teach him to look through my letter box !
No seriously old people are always banging onabout people having theirs eyes out with something.
Has anyone ever witnessed it first hand ?

If our planet is inhabited with creatures made by God...is it possible that there's another planet inhabited with creatures made by the Devil?

Both religion and science is the desire to understand what one can't see, hear or touch.

Picture the first person to look upon the stars and wonder what's out there, would this be a scientific or religious thought? I'd say a little of both and has been every since.

"have you been drinking son?" says the officer

"Only in church!" I will reply

"Good boy!" the officer says while walking away.

I don't think even if it's a "sip" children should be allowed to drink wine in church. You can't give a "sip" to a child in your house...why is it allowd when in God's house?

Does this contradict a Christian holding a position of power in their profession?

If not meek, what did he teach (in a word or two, not a thesis).

Christians do this quite often, claiming that deep down atheists really believe in God, but are just in denial.

I've seen it a few times on here the other way, atheists saying that Christians know deep down inside that their beliefs are ridiculous, but are too afraid to admit it.

I know I've asked a similar question before, but I'm wondering again what is it that makes us so eager to impose our own thoughts on others. I have no way of knowing why you believe or don't believe in God or anything else unless you tell me. To suppose anything else is extremely arrogant. I would hope that there would be an easier way of understanding each other than making something up. What do you think?

This was a response left by another member (no need to point fingers - Im sure you can recognize your own handiwork):

"When you realize that Genesis exactly agrees with science on the creation of the universe then ask yourself how did they get it so right, so many years ago."

Now, correct me if I am wrong, but 1) science doesnt even agree on the origins of the universe, and certainly doesnt state that it is "created" and 2) Genesis' account of the Creation has trees and man existing before the sun was created - how can you consider that "getting it so right, so many years ago?"

Isnt that being intellectually dishonest?

This is NOT a question about the actual content or truth of Christian beliefs. It is a question about Christian methods of argument and reasoning.

I specify Christians because about 95% of this type of reasoning comes from Christians. Also, I know the quotes I use in the example below are made up -- the question is about method, not content, so the precise quotes are irrelevant.

A fairly typical argument from a Christian on this site would go something like this:

"The bible is all true. The proof is that Corinthians X:Y says: 'everything that is written in this book is true.'"

OR

"Jews should acknowledge the Old Testament has been superseded. After all, don't they know that Matthew X:Y says 'the Old Testament has been superseded'".

This is entirely circular reasoning, and should never convince someone who is not already convinced. Why is it that Christians (and, pretty much, only Christians) feel this is a logically legitimate argument?

Like, would there be a situation where ol' Jesus is chillin up on the 2nd floor balcony (inside), hears the front door slam, strolls over to the railing to look down into the foyer area, then exclaims "Oh snap, keg's here! F yeah!!!" while making a beeline towards said pole?

Indeed.

My confession:
I am a Jew, and every single one of my ancestors was Jewish. And it does not bother me even a little bit when people call those beautiful lit up, bejeweled trees Christmas trees. I don't feel threatened. I don't feel discriminated against. That's what they are: Christmas trees.
It doesn't bother me a bit when people say, "Merry Christmas" to me. I don't think they are slighting me or getting ready to put me in a ghetto. In fact, I kind of like it. It shows that we are all brothers and sisters celebrating this happy time of year. It doesn't bother me at all that there is a manger scene on display at a key intersection near my beach house in Malibu . If people want a crche, it's just as fine with me as is the Menorah a few hundred yards away .
I don't like getting pushed around for being a Jew, and I don't think Christians like getting pushed around for being Christians. I think people who believe in God are sick and tired of getting pushed around, period.

Countles Native Americans have experienced visions where they spoke to the animal spirit guides, and were immediately more mature and responsible afterward.

Is this proof that they were real?

How do you know you are not mistaken your animal guide for angels or God?

If churches were taxed for all their income and property, they’d crumble overnight of their own obsolescence, and the National Debt would be wiped out as quickly. The productive, the creative, the resourceful should be subsidized. So long as the useless and incompetent are getting paid, they should be heavily taxed.

I met this guy, and we've been dating a 2 months.

I've already met his parents several times, but he's invited me to a family dinner this weeked (his cousins are in from Europe). It's at his grandmom's house and she is doing all the cooking (appatizers thru dessert).

He insists I shouldn't bring anything, but what does ettiquette call for? I brought flowers and dessert for his mom before, but should i get something for the extended family? I don't want to insult anyone, but I don't want to look rude either! >_<

All my life, I have people saying this to me, because I always do my best to try to understand other people, and always end up forgiving who hurt me. This doesn't mean that all is well, and that I want who hurt me (or others) around me again, only that I really always try to understand.

How do you feel about this?

Thank you for the ideas!

Just to let you know, I am christian, and I don't have a problem with anybody being homosexual. I'm just interested on your opinions of the matter, because we're having a debate about it at school, and i think it would be good to get some other opinions about it. I am aware that it never says in the bible that there should be no homosexuals, but people all have different opinions, and my debate focuses a lot on christian's view of homosexuality - just looking for opinions here!! (sorry for so much writing, but some people can be quite touchy on the matter, and i don't mean to stereotype, or offend)

We have evidence. We have the Bible. We have the Holy Spirit which gives us a feeling that is undeniable. Faith is not belief without evidence. The evidence may be emotional and in the heart, but it IS evidence.

What do you think?

I'm a young, gay female (21) and I have a serous problem.
When I was about 15 I went to a new school. I was in the last year and so we had to see a career's advisor. She came once a week, and the first time I saw her I felt perfectly normal, but there was something 'close' about her body language. She would often look me right in the eye, and smile- just in a way that made me think- do I fancy her? She didn't seem attractive to me at all- in fact I found her unttractive physically. But there was something charming about her.
As time went on, I came to admit to myself I had a crush on her, and it grew slowly until I was excited to see her every week. I tried not to let it show, but my embarrassment in front of her might have let her know- she seems a very clever woman. I think she must have known.
-. I am running out of characters to explain, so I will I will find a way t continue the story below somehow.

Since we get our own food and drinks, is it the customer's responsibility to pay for the people that clean the tables?

I was under the impression that buffets, pizza places, sandwich shops and other eateries where we go to the counter (or buffet line) for our own food are strictly "tip optional".
