Because finally there are books out there that mirror people's interests. Proof that they are best sellers. Who do you think are buying these books? Atheists, yes, but also those who proclaim to be Christians, but are not. Maybe some day all who are atheists will have the courage to come forward. Until then, READ and THINK!

Partly because there are more and more atheists all the time.
But a lot of it is probably due to the climate of religious intollerance, and the pressure put on society by the Theocrats.
At least here in the U.S. those who want to force their beliefs have been gaining poiwer, and becoming more and more strident about wanting to force everyone to abandon science and embrace narrow-mindedness and hate.
Those of us who have to listen to the American Taliban all the time need the relief of reading the sweet voice of reason.

There has been a tremendous wave of anti-religion all sorts of things for several decades now...and you are just now noticing because of some books?
Suppose...
...
Just suppose, for a second...
...
Suppose that someone were to tell you that the secular world was destined to overcome Christianity...
Would you be terribly surprised?
No...probably not. In fact, as I'm sure you know, there are multitudes of people looking forward to it.
...
Suppose I were to tell you that this was foretold almost 2,000 years ago? And by one of Christ's own disciples?
Would that surprise you?
ev 13:6 And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven.
Rev 13:7 And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations.
There are a few of us who have been expecting this "great awakening" (which is really a great deception) for some time.
We are neither surprised by it, nor particularly frightened. It does make us sad, though...so many who think they've got it "all figured out"...
But then, nobody can say that they weren't warned, can they?

You have a good point. Our big box retailer is making huge money off of anti-catholic books like Dan Brown and all the other Templar conspiracies. I can at least 30 best sellers with similar themes of the cathoic church is evil and hidden meanings in the bible. But, one little danish Muslim cartoon and they ban that publication from their bookstores. What a load of hypocrisy.

It's not a sudden interest. Atheism existed long before religion was invented. It's just SAFER for people to read and write about atheism (and non-Christian religions) now, and to admit that they aren't Christians, since up until recently, it was considered acceptable for Christians to KILL non-Christians.
Unfortunately, many people are unaware of Christianity's real history, since the churches have controlled the education (or lack thereof) of its members. The internet and cable/satellite TV are helping to spread the facts!

Controversy always sells, whether it makes sense or not is a different debate altogether.
When Da vinci was released, there were many intelligent people wo went around proclaiming that this was the truth, when the author himself admitted that it was a work of fiction! I really can't figure these people out, and then they say that we are delusional. They are willing to accept anything as long as it's anti-christian.

Because they are finally interested in something OTHER than the previous (and continuing) wave of Vehemently Religious (and primarily Christian, in the United States) books that have been flooding book store shelves for the past decade?

Because people are now free of ridicule for being atheist unlike in the past. Unfortunately prejudice is still about. Notice how all the candidates for President stress their strong belief in God. not saying that would be political suicide.

My guess is because of all the bad things that have been happening. We have always been predominately based on Christianity, but these bad things keep happening so they think that there is no god, or some other god, since he hasn't helped us. Even though it was us that turned our back to him and he's just trying to get our attention.
